Starting a Oldsmobile customs thread to see what you have and what was done? Need some insperation ideas. This is a 53 Olds 88/super 88 clone, 303CI, fenton headers, 2004R Trans,
following this to see what shows up. here is a 50 98 that would make a great custom. barn find down in Charlotte on CL. Have never seen a 98 slant back, way too cool
I had a '50 98 Club Sedan that I bought for parts ... it was like driving a "50 Buick with an Olds in it ... Engine - a sunbonnet on a stock Olds isn't really a custom ...
Here is a picture of my old 55 Olds Holiday 98. Purchased from the original owner. I built it as a mild custom, that was nosed, & decked, and lowered 3 inches. I kept the original power train. If I had to do it over again I would have re-chromed the bumpers.
my first car was almost a 50 Olds Coupe that lived in the neighborhood when I was a kid. it sat in the driveway with a faded candy red paint job, nosed and decked, louvered hood, rusted chrome wheels with small whitewalls. had a California rake and the coolest red and white tuck and roll interior I had ever seen. it was all kind of faded and worn out but I thought it was the coolest car ever. in the garage was a yellow 32 roadster with a Cad or Olds motor, maybe a Pontiac, (I was only 15) definitely GM. I saw it in the local paper for like $1,000.00. sadly it wasn't until the next year when I had a job and money to buy something, ended up with a stock 1949 Chevrolet instead. it sold and I never saw it again. every time I see a 50 Olds with a louvered hood I wonder if it is the same car.
The painted front bumper on the red Olds above actually isn't bad at all, it works with the molded hood pieces and the chrome bar, makes a kinda roll pan effect. Like a 52-54 Mercury with the center bar chromed and the lower section painted body color. Doesn't work as well in the rear but still overall that's a nice looking car, it has a definite mid 60's vibe going for it. I like it.
In 1966 my room mate in the AF bought a beautiful 56 Olds from a dealer on South Tacoma Way in Tacoma, Wa. It was a lowered orange 2dr sedan, 324 with trips, 3 speed stick, Mickey Thompson chrome tri bar mags and black roll and tucked interior. Tranny kept going out on it so he switched to an auto and had it painted blue. I think he sold it around the Santa Rosa, Ca soon after he got out in 1970.
This yellow and white 55 super 88 was our family car for many years and then I bought it. When my folks owned it, I broke the transmission, an axle, a U-joint and wore a flat spot on my dad's brand new snow tire. I eventually traded it in on a 57 Pontiac. When I was 16 I bought a 56 Olds 98 convertible in red and white. Had new paint and interior...sweet running 324 but I absolutely hated that car...transmissio n was sloppy, car weighed a TON and the girls weren't impressed. Wish I had a photo of that one.
That may make a great custom but the visor has to go. There was two groups of people who added visors to their cars in the 50s and neither group was hotrodders
Actually, I believe having owned so many '35 - '58 Oldsmobiles that I lost count years ago qualifies me as an Olds fan ... I'm just not a garbage fan.
I have a 54 Olds Super 88 2 door sedan I traded a slant six Plymouth head off a derby car for in 1990 with no engine or trans. Put a 58 Pontiac 370 tri-power mill with a 4 speed hydro. Life put it on the back burner so it has sit in the garage since then. Finally getting around to messing with it, hope to have it running in the next few months. The guy I got it from said it was his Dad's street racer, still has the Jahns decals on the back windows.
SUPER rare, but out there. I had a '50 Buick Sedanette that I sold and was on the hunt for a Olds 98 since the body was almost the same but with a V8.
Man you guys know how to bait me! My 49 club coupe,50 2 door fastback and 48 98. The 49 is my driver with a .60 over 324(345) #16 heads with 2.02/1.60 chevy valves, Harmon’s and Collins solid roller domed pistons and a weiand 3x2 tuned off a wideband. It had a 200r with a 2600 converter. Original interior and old paint job. She shines though.
My first car was a '55 Olds 4-dr sedan but when I couldn't get it to start, I took the motor apart and never got it back together again. Probably only needed the timing reset or something but I didn't know anything. Ended up paying somebody to haul it away.
What happened to the 50 Olds 88 club sedan I chopped back in 1972? No photos thanks to the times and X-Wife but it was cut 3" in a very unusual way. Below the Deck lid, modified rear fender roll, lost the angle in rear quarter window, vertical B-Post and A-Pillar not pulled back. 68 Olds front clip and a 455 under the Hood. I sold it in spring of 74 and it was never seen or heard of after. I bet it's gathering dust in someones garage. The Wizzard
I've posted pics of my 55 Olds many times here. Might not have did this one, though. Still have it, but needs complete resto.
Here's my 55 88. No radical body mods other than shaving some trim and emblems. Full custom interior, flipped hood hinge, IFS, 9" rear, custom wheels.
Flipped hood hinges? I'd like to see how you did that and how the Hood works. Very intreaging. Have any photos? The Wizzard
Will see what pictures I have. Traveling this week. I used the Buick LeSabre setup with a lot of mods. I had to push the grill bar back about 3" and reshape the stands. I think it looks better that way anyway instead of sticking out so far. Built my own "roller coaster" track at the back end and a generic hood latch up front. I also used a large GM SUV hood release cable. It works great, but was a ton of work. P.S. - Sorry, didn't have time to photoshop out the engine.....
