Is the early Cadillac crankshaft cast or forged? I need to have some machine work done to the crank once I get it out. It has fairly wide parting lines, but it also has a well defined number in relief. My head says cast steel, but my heart hopes forged. Anyone know for sure?

    Definitely a forging.

    Of course it's a forging - it's not an ordinary car, it's a Cadillac.

One of the "backyard" ways to test a forged crankshaft is to hang it by the crank hub then hit each counterweight with a hammer, they should ring like a bell. If any of them sound "dead" chances are the crank is cracked.
