Just got a 49 Cadillac and I'm try to figure out the model. Not sure if it's a 61 series or a 60 series fleetwood. The VIN starts 4961, so that means 61 series right? The trunk has fleetwood emblems and the trim looks like all the pics I've seen of fleetwoods. Are there 61 series fleetwoods? I'm going to part the car out because it's kinda rough, but I'd like to know as much as I can about it before I start selling stuff. Any help is appeciated.

One photograph would save everyone a heap of trouble. Put one up and you'll have an answer within minutes. (We are visually oriented on this site!)

  3. Model number 4961 definitely IS a 1949 Series 61. Other choices would be 4962, 4960S and 4975. It not a Series 75, because you didn't get a zip code with it (those things are BIG!!). Next to note, wheelbase. 61 and 62's had a 126" WB; 60S had 133". 75's were 136. O/A length = 214/226/226(poss. misprint, that last). 61 and 62's major differences were minor trim changes, the addition of rocker panel trim, and grooved front gravel shields. Series 61 had chevrons below the taillights, whereas 62's did not.
60S (Sixty-Special) had hydraulic power windows as standard, chrome trim slashes on the sail panel, and much thinner and taller rear gravel shields, reaching 3/4 up the fender (vs less than half).
Finally, check the Body/Style number (trim tag). All begin with the series number.

    Hope this helps,
    Cosmo

fleetwoods had "fleetwood" on the trunk. all the rest had a V and a cadillac crest. fleetwoods are 60 series. a 61 series is the less adorned 4dr and fastback. converts and coupe devilles are all 62. i need a fleetwood trunk lid if you're parting it out.

Does have hyd windows, taller gravel sheild, fleetwood on the trunk, and the chrome trim on the sail panel, but the model number is 4961. That's where I'm confused.

  9. You have a Sixty-Special. That part is unmistakable. Cannot help on the model number, but the model itself is the very desirable Sixty-Special.
