Great work!!!! Just went though a similar chop on a 48 Buick. When it came to modifying the deck lid , I removed the skin , cut and formed the inner frame to the body opening and then modified the skin to fit. Basically the same process just a slightly different procedure order. If you did another one , What would you do differently?
That's exactly what I was thinking Rik. I've looked at literally hundreds of pictures of '49-52 Chevy customs since I started this project, and I've never seen this modification done before. Most of the time when the Merc grille surround is used, the stock hood is retained, and the Merc shell flattened to match it....this makes the front of the car look "stubby" in my eyes. I'll give more details about this change later...I still have to put it all together first! Thanks Rik...
This may sound strange, but I can't think of anything I'd do differently. The only thing that comes to mind is that I would have liked to be able to metalfinish the decklid skin to where no filler was required, but that wasn't time/cost effective since this is a customer's car. As it is, the lead is basically a skim coat with the exception of the factory body seam at the C-pillar. I spent so much time planning this chop and thinking about the cuts and their result, that I really can't say that I would change anything about the process. Thanks for the compliments!

No kidding! I can't think how that shape could possible be any better. Very tricky, nicely planned and executed. Always dug the hot rod fabrication stuff you've done, but son, you have a gift for building customs! Top shelf all the way!

Absolutely beautiful work. You never cease to amaze with your mind and imagination not the least your craftsmanship. All you need now is a little Mexican fella with a sombrero, smoking a cigar on a scooter riding around in front of your shop and you will have it all.
You did what Chevy designers intended to do before they got lost in conservatism. Words can hardly describe the beauty of those lines.
