Hi, My neighbor has had this 49 chevy fastback on blocks in his yard for the last 30 years. It is siezed up and has not moved in years. The blocks seemed to have saved the frame and the body mounts all feel very nice. The windows were broken out by some kids and then raccoons moved in. They are still in there, althoughnot quite as alive as they used to be. Other than the floorboards the sheetmetal is solid. He is asking $700.00 and i have a mildly built 350 chevy out of a 69 impala and a t5 behind it to go in the car. Do you guys think it is worth the $700. I would like to know that i can get my money out of it should i decide that i dont have time for it. Secondly has anyone done the 350/t5 swap into a fastback. I would be interested to know how hard the conversion is. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Darren

Just know that is about the easiest classic to find parts for AND the parts are relatively cheap. So if you want a rod thats a good choice. what is that two or four door? if two that doesnt sound too bad of a deal and v8 convos are said to be pretty easy. if ya can bargain him down a bit that would be worth it right there.
Heck yea!!! Show him $500 cash, if he doesn't bit go back to the house and "see" if you can rustle up a couple hundred more. Never pay retail! Then if you need a new back window, let me know I might be able to help you out.
Yeah, I'd take $500 and a six pack over on friday afternoon. I think it would be in your garage in the morning. I love them fastbacks!
Check our chevytalk.org and 50chevy.com for everything you needed to know about transplanting a small block in a 49-52 chev
Oh for the love of God! Not more raccoons coming to demise in a mid century chevrolet. Can you really blame them for searching out some cool diggs? Besides they make the best shop pets ever! Don't even get me started on what a chic magnet they are... I'd suggest that in the future you'd try and stay in their good graces lest they target you.
Im prolly going to drag it home saturday, ill take some pics of it cleaned up then. did the picture links not work???
see the little mountain icon when you do a quick reply, paste the link in there for each one and they'll come up as a pic in your post.
$700 is a steal, don't be an ass and lowball him you might just piss him off and lose the chance to buy.
$700 sounds like a lot for one with no floors, no glass and a totally dead motor. For that money it better still have paint on it and have decent chrome on both ends. Before scrap went nuts (2005) I paid $200 for a '50 Fleetline with the same deal - the kids knocked all the glass out - that had a running '56 235 in it, would lot drive, and while the bodywork was a mess of all the ways to do things wrong, it was at least done, it has floors in it. I also had a line on the glass at the time, too. Even now I can get a solid '50 Pontiac coupe right now with clean paper, up and rolling with the motor partly apart for $500. A Pontiac is less work to remotor, you can get by with the original rearend to get yourself up and rolling, and the frame is a lot tougher. The glass is going to be a bitch to find because it's Fleetline only - you can have the flat glass cut, too, but need to source the front and back. At the crusher the ones we've junked (49-52 Chevys) have been bringing $280-$300, so that one's probably worth $400 anyhow. Check the left A-post under the rubber and the hinge mounts for rot. Make sure the serial tag is intact on the same post. You'd be able to get your money back out of it though, if it's as solid as you say you should be able to pick $1000 or so of parts out of it, the grille, steering wheel, tail pan and fenders should bring that total together pieced out.
By the way, what's your neighbors address??? ___________ It's worth what ever you sold it for on that day or in your case, what ever you're willing to pay.
I notice you're in Michigan...that car looks pretty solid for a Michigan car...I'd take it--the '49/'50 fastbacks are some of my favorite cars! If that was my neighbor, I'd buy it and worry about where to put it later!
I made the deal, going to drag it home saturday. Does anyone know where I can locate some glass? Also, how much work would it take to get a 3rd gen camaro axle under the car. i know that it needs perches and such, but what kind of narrowing needs to be done?
Glass is pretty easy http://www.chevsofthe40s.com/search.lasso?Dept=Car&Group=Window Glass And Rubber and such, not sure about the camaro rear, you'd probably be better off/cheaper getting a year that is already the right width: '68-'79 nova/camaro with a 15x7 wheel, or the same gen. Ford if you don't mind the cross breed thing. Ideal is a 58" axle ('65-'67 nova, '67-'70 mustang-mine (Big block for a 9") or '75-'80 Granada).
I paid $250 for a '48 Fleetline Aero that had been rottin in the woods since '62. No good glass, no floors, no rockers, not much more than an outline of a car. 3 years later I can drive it. It's not quite "street legal", what ever that means, but it looks like you have twice the amount of car to start w/than I had. I'd say $700 is fare if you can use the seats, gages, speedo, and radiator. Here's my lil' turd muffin.
Find someone local to get all your flat glass cut. Buy the curved glass used. Chevs of the '40s are a bunch of rapists. I'm done dealing w/them. They will charge you the cost of the parts for shipping. I'd deal directly w/ Steelerubber products, and even look in JC Whitney for the rubber stuff. Chevs rubbers cost me 3 times as much as it was to have a local glass shop cut all the flat glass for my car.
www.chevytalk.com any info on your upgrades will be there. rearends of choice used to be 55'-57' chevys but seem to be getting hard to find so s10 4wd rearends seem to be popular(2wd is too narrow) 70'-81' camaro/75'-79' nova work also. cool ride to start with. good luck and keep us posted with lots of pic's.
S10 4WD rears fit nice. Had one in my 49' fleetline. I was an idiot and sold it when I was mad at it. Stupidest thing I have ever done. One day I will get another one. Hopefully with less rust.
Dragged her home today. Here are a few pics and a few pics of my 49 stude coupe. Also got the 216 to turn over. might see if i can get her running before i swap engines. http://www.flickr.com/photos/7239867@N05/2578546397/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/7239867@N05/2578545817/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/7239867@N05/2579375740/ http://www.flickr.com/photos/7239867@N05/2579377036/
