I am going to take a look at a 49 F1 this weekend that in the photos, appears to be solid. The issue that I am uncertain about is that it has a Volare frontend already installed which can have it's advantages, However, can someone give me some things I should be looking for to help to determine if it was done correctly or if the reason it is for sale is because it is FUBAR Thanks CP
First things to check for, boxing plates. Seen a ton of them without them and with how much of the frame rail needs to be hacked away to do the installation properly the boxing plates are very much needed. Common to see frame horns cracked in front of the Volare' crossmember, obviously from stress but I believe from the Volare' K-member flexing from lack of support. The crossed torsion bars up front carry the load of the front suspension and this, in the stock car was supported by the body structure. Again this is why boxing plates and good welding are very important. Steering and motor mounts can be very hacked up. If not done to your satisfaction, could cause you a ton of grief.
The attached link shows how much work goes into a proper Volare swap. This project is a Dodge truck but you will get the idea and can see what to look for on the Ford. http://www430.pair.com/p15d24/mopar_forum/showthread.php?t=14259 .
