I am getting ready to work on the brakes of my 49 F1. I bought the disc brake kit from speedway for the front, and am using a 12bolt rearend out of a chev truck that has drums. I am wondering if i can use the master cylinder that is in the F1, or should i upgrade it? I was told that i could use it if i run the wilwood 2psi and 10psi valves.

    Looking for advise!!!

    Thanks

Upgrade. Early Mustang disc drum with no power works good. IMHO

upgrade so you have a dual master cylinder. Cheap insurance. Use an adjustable proportioning valve, I think I'd suggest the one with the built in brake light switch. I haven't added it on my F1 yet, but friends that follow me say my brake lights don't come on early enough.

I did my 49 with a ECI kit. You can buy a adapter from them that will let you bolt up the mustang MC in place of the original. Besides the residual valves you also need a metering valve in the front to let the rear brakes come on before the discs. I put a proportioning valve in the rear line too. Everything works real well. You can get a brake light switch that operates at low pressure. The stock one doesn't come on until you have the brakes on and the line pressure is pretty high. I am going to do away with the pressure switch and put a mechanical switch on the brake pedal. That way the lights will come on when the pedal is barely depressed.

Yeah, my 52 F1 requires a good bit of pedal pressure to activate the brake lights, not very sensitive at all. I've replaced one already because it was intermittant. I built a OT Cobra kit car years ago that used a pressure switch for brake lights and it worked perfectly, with light pedal pressure. Wish I knew the P/N for that pressure switch, although its probably the same switch used by Fords from like 1940 to 1964 and I just got a good switch.
I like the adapter dgc15 spoke of. The brakes on my 52 F1 are all stock, new everything and it stops great, but if I ever had to change the M/C I would go with the ECI adapter and Mustang dual unit.
