Heres another what where and when post relating to our newly aquired 49 Fleetline. All customs do***entation shows a recorded ch***is number of GAA493508 for this car but now we are getting ready to register it for use in the UK can we find the thing....... NO!!!!! Can anyone tell me where to find my ch***is number and put me out of my misery please. I have found a body serial number on the left door pillar and a trim number under the windshield on the right but alas no ch***is no. Help.
As far as I know there was no ch***is number on chevys of that year(my 52 doesnt have one) They were ***led under the Engine number (Dumb)
I think that's about all you will find mate,at least that's all there is on my 52. My 41 pick up has a ch***is # on the outside of the ch***is rail about 8 ins back from the L/H front wheel.(but you didn't ask about 41s did you?) Good luck.
"might" be on top side of frame p***enger side about where p***enger's floor board would be(check with mirror & flash light). I'm sure your ***le number would have been the engine stamped number above the starter though.
Some US states registered the car under the engine number which is on the right side of the 216 block. This is actually incorrect way to do it and the correct serial number of the vehicle is the one on the left door jamb.
My '52 Chev was imported from California into Canada. The serial used was the engine number. I bought the car as a roller and thus no serial on the car. I got an affadavit from the seller stating he had removed engine serial # so and so. That along with information off the net plus having DMV inspect the actual correct # on the door allowed me to correct the registration. (1949 p***enger car with 216 cu in) It appears that the 'customs' paperwork references the engine ID which is used in several states in the US on ***le information on early vehicles. This was entered into the "Ch***is Number" block on the ***le when there was no "Engine Number" block. "Most" owners today, who have updated their engines, have had DMV change the ***le to show the 'body' number referenced above. Its odd that it got shipped without the numbers being verified.
Thanks for the info guys, looks like ***le number was taken from the original engine as mentioned and then the papers never updated. Typically the engine it now has only has casting numbers and no individual engine number stamped on the tab by the distributor. I am surprised that the car got out through US customs and all the way over here without anyone noticing that the ***le number didin't appear on the car anywhere!!!! Time for me to start convincing our licensing authority that the car is legit! Fingers crossed.
