Hi Guys, i have dropped a 351W with a 4 speed toploader box into my 49. i changed the sump and now need to fit a 90 degree adapter to the oilfilter so it can clear the cross member. My question is the enging mountings. Has any one here done this conversion? the issue is the mounting points on the motor sit too far back and the cross member is further forward. i cant move the motor any more forward due to the sump and ill run out of space for the fan/radiater... Any suggestions? Thanks in advance. William
Were it mine, I would look at attaching some rectangular tube material from either side of the frame siderails toward the engine mount area. Depending on what style mounts you choose to put on the engine, you can shape the ends of the tubes accordingly. Stock Ford mounts would utilize a pad at about a 45* angle. If you use early Ford style 'biscuits', then a simple flat pad with a hole in it will do.
STP S3512 is a short oil filter that may get you the room that you need without going remote. Works well for me.
I used a remote filter with a 302 but should be the same thing. Just mounted the filter on the frame with a simple bracket. Oil changes have never bee easier. My motor sits low and had no room for a filter.
I should mention i made my own motor mounts using flatty mounts and made my own brackets. Not sure if sbf mounts get in the road. Motor is about 1 inch from firewall
I posted some pics in a thread I started of a 289 install in my 49 ford. I started with jamco mounts and cut them up and reworked them to get the position I needed. I am using an angled filter adapter.
Thanks guys, i have ordered the short filter and the normal 351w motor mounts. Ill hang the motor in place and measure up and make some mounts and bolt them to the frame. I enquired about the Jamco mount kit but living in South Africa by the time they land here im looking over 3k for them. I origonally wanted to put a flattie back in it and got as far as finding a donor car with a flathead but when i worked out what it will cost to rebuild it i nearly had a heart attack. I really appreciate the advice, i will keep you posted on the build Thank you.
You may be lucky. I spent most of the weekend afternoons trying to install both water pumps on my 49 sedan flathead. Pumps not so bad but it's the angled motor mounts that are a nightmare. I should have used a lift instead of on my back literally under a tree. There may be no answer for this but ya wonder what the hell Ford Engineers were thinking? The truck style biscuit mounts are a breeze and easy to replace. They should have used the same system on the cars - but Nooooooooooooooo! Never did get the mounts in - using a lift tomorrow....... With your new motor ya can fab up a easy fix.
