I already have a 4dr and a chopped coupe.I am about to start another 49 2dr merc project, this one had a totally destroyed roof which was removed to make way for a removable carson top. I do have some options. The windsheild has been lowered 5". Should I , A. go with a removable carson top. B. convertible it. I have a set of 56 caddy top bows . C. hard top it. I have a 56 olds holiday 4dr hdtp roof and a 49 merc rear window opening in a 4dr parts car. I am wanting to use up some existing inventory, in other words I have this stuff laying around and have done this kind of thing before. Each version will have roll up side glass. The question is which one will have the most " Cool" factor?
I think it would be cool to take the door pillars out leave it a hard top and put extra sized side windows or all one piece side windows!! Leave it un chopped it will look like a big vw bug!! Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
I like the hardtop idea. A sedan with the roof cut off to make a convertible rarely pulls off the right look.
This one is outside the box.... a three door hardtop! Check the photos carefully. The passenger side has both front and rear doors, while the driver side has one extended door. People looked at it all day long, never even noticing it was a three door! (Sorry for the whitewall reflections in the second photo that destroy the arrow straightness of the side stainless.)
If I find another mercury roof there might be a mercury stuck to the bottom of it that should stay stuck to the bottom of it, if you know what I mean. I was wanting to use the available resources that I have, but who knows 49ratfink, I might cave in.
So far the consensus seems to be that I shold hardtop it. Looks like the belt line off a 57 buick, nice.
If, IF I had a merc roof, a chopped top with pillars or hard topped would have the best cool factor. Because a vehicle with a chopped roof always looks chopped, whereas a chopped convertible with the top down doesn't have the same appeal all the time, a chopped padded carson top has the look as long as the top is on but if it is removable looses the look when it is off plus you have to leave it somewhere, for this reason a convertible is more practical because if you put the top down you still take it with you. True ,a covertible doesn't look as custom as a carson top, however function does have a place. I have been looking at the 56 olds hard top roof and am not sure how the roof rail line will work so I think I will try it. and if it looks absurd I will abandon that idea and go with the convertible plan.
I'd use the Olds roof..... Try to retain the rear glass Why not? Posted using the Full Custom H.A.M.B. App!
Some guys on here are amazing... Yes of course a 1949 merc with a 49 merc roof looks right...why wouldn't it? ......but customs are kustoms ......? What drives this forum and the cars we build are ingenuity. ... It's either mixing it up ..or building something outta nothing ....for me that's what is all about..Big A is living it as far as mixing it up....check him out....his build is amazing As far as something outta nothing , Well you've entered the house of "chop777" I've got less than $2500 In my project...plus in my case I've got much more skill than patients..... So it will be what it is when I'm done It's cool to build a period correct custom But more fun to just let your kustom Evolve into something cool especially when you say you've already got 2 or 3 Mercs....Enjoy yourself and build what you like...If someone at a car show or gas station somewhere says how they would Change my car to make it cooler ..I just will smile ear to ear ....and if they say to bad it's a four door ....I may just laugh out loud.....build what you like and enjoy it ......I'm out ....The soapbox is starting to buckle....
