Thought I would show a progress pix of the Merc. Tonight I lowered the car by removing the springs in order to mock up the motor mounts before I make the welds. This is what it looked like when I picked it up a few months ago.
That's my next project after my wife's new toy, finding myself a Merc to make a lead sled. But that will have to wait until I'm finish wit my current projects. But your looking good so far.
Thanks for the positive comments. The car is chopped 4" but I'll still have to do all the finish work. For now, I plan on lowering the car by cutting the front springs and 3/4" spacers under the control arms and lowering blocks in the back; air bags may come later when I can get the funds together. The trim will go back on the body as well as the original grill. For paint, I'm thinking of something close to the original green with pearl added. I had a SBC in the garage that I've been saving for a project, so I guess that will be the power plant for now.
Sorry about the sbc, it's the best I can do for now...There is a Cadillac 390 in the waiting if that helps.
looking good, ya we all wish we had a hemi, nailhead or some other cool engine just sitting around, but seems i always end up with 302's or 350's too. i like looking at your chop reminds me what mine will look like when i take the blade to it!!
Matt...do you have any tech articles posted that show how you cut and fit the stainless trim ? I found a couple of older posts on here but the pictures aren't showing up.
Nice start!! Any other progress pics? Check here for a few trim links. http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=392068 and heres Matts http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=243975
i think 51gringo did one on the stainless.. i think. the one i did was on forming the brass for the windows and then plating it. not sure if you slanted your b-pillars a lot but the stainless gets to be a****** when they have a nice slant too them, and i make new radius for the windows so things get a little tight in bending, thats why ill do the brass trim
Thanks for the pics, looks great. Just curious, you said it is a "4 in. chop" is that 4" from the A pillar B pillar or minus 4" vertical? Thanks again.
The Merc looks great. I'm just about done with one for a customer. For a great looking custom you just can't beat a Merc. Chris
