Ok...firstly, before I'm reminded, here's a couple of informative threads I've found, which suggest that a good (ie simple & effective) 'upgrade' is the F150 box....but which one? http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=54262<?xml:namespace prefix = o ns = "urn:schemas-microsoft-comfficeffice" /><o></o> http://www.jalopyjournal.com/forum/showthread.php?t=138834 Long story cut short, my brother here in OZ bought Feders ol merc, to which we're just tidying it up a bit so that we can get it registered down here, nothing crazy, just sorting stuff, one such area is the steering. Now, whilst the existing steering box works fine, in OZ we're not permitted to use steering components that are welded, to which, the existing steering box has been welded to the steering column universal....so, we either need to find another stock box, or find an alternative. Note: this is a standard frame, standard front suspension, but with a 429 Caddy engine..LH drive, the steering column is going to be replaced as well, although yet to be decided with what... These kind of cars are few and far between over here, so, whilst I'd love to adapt it to something we have here, can't see it happening any time soon as he wants to be driving this summer (your winter). In the interest of being a bit better eduacated, are there many 'common' options availible, prefferences to replacement units, any details/photo's on the F150 adaption? etc etc Note: not intending to do a front clip or anything like that, just want a relatively simple fix so he can get driving... Cheers, Drewfus Here's the car in question...(props to Feder)
Is there enough shaft on the box to cut off the weld bit and machine the stub to a single or double D .
you could use a 78-79 f150 4x4 box on the inside of the p*** frame and reverse the pitman arm.. to run a right had drive.. there identical in size and shape, to the 2wd box. just reversed sector shafts and one mounts to the inside of frame the other to the outside matt
sadly no Matt, thanks for the info, at this stage the car will remain LH drive, in the interest of time, and the fact that we really like the merc dash, something that doesn't exist in LHD Cheers, Drewfus
any f150 from 1973-79 i think it is. this merc i put one on for a customer. it has all the bolt on goddies from fatman. i read your post so fast i thought you wrote RH drive!!
