Hi everyone, Jut picked up this '49 Pontiac Silver Streak over here in the UK. First job is wide whites, I know of someone with a set of L78s hes taking off his Buick. which are a great price. I know the Pontiac had 7.10 x 15 but has anyone fitted L78s on a similar car and where they too big for it and did they rub?
A 7.10-15 equates to a G78-15 which would now be a P21575R15 A 8.20-15 equates to a L78-15 which would now be a P23575R15 Quite a bit of difference in size. The L78 probably won't fit your wheels.
My later Pontiac came with 7.10 from the factory. I had L78 with no clearance problems but they were on aftermarket wheels.
Dunno about the tires but the stock width ones offer plenty grip- you'll need arms like Popeye to park it with L78's on. Oh, and the trim below the headlight loosens off (if it's not rusted solid), as does the trim on the hood. There's no reason for the "normal" bucktooth grille surround. Mine was like that and took about 5 minutes to align. Don't treat it like a racing car. You will be holding up traffic, yessir. Should you feel bad about it? Nope. Phil
