Just picked up my 302 for the 56 Customline. Anyone have any experience running a 4r70w behind it? Will I need to make mods to the tunnel? Same sizes or is the c4 smaller? Thank you for the input!

No mods to the ****** tunnel for my '57, don't know about your '56, but you are aware the 4R70w is a computer controlled ******? I believe I've read in the past controllers are available, but not 100% sure.

Yes, several companies are now making stand alone controllers. $500 and up last I checked, part of the reason I still have a C4!

    Why not use an AOD?

Per the guy who rebuilt the AOD going into my 55 Customline, internal parts from the 4R70W can be installed in the AOD case to get the design and lubrication improvements of the later years without the need for the electronics. My AOD is built that way, but not on the road yet. Sorry I can’t give a report on how well it fits in the tunnel or drives. Hopefully the body goes back on the frame this summer.

Have early AOD’s in my 53F100 and in my 55 Sunliner. Both work excellent. The 55 required no tunnel mods.

Another advantage of the 4R70W is the wide ratio pattern which give a better gear spread. You can also install a manual valve body which byp***es the Electronics but you have to manually shift every gear.

I have a b&m Quicksilver # 80683 I never used except for mockup when I was building my console. Not sure why I bought it since, at the time, they didn't make the shifter kit for the 4R70W. I must have had a reason, but that was over 10 years ago. I ended up using the shifter out of the Mark VIII. Only issue it may have is B&M recommends not shifting the lever until things are hooked up. I did shift it because I needed to know the lever's travel for the console opening size. I'll sell for 200. including shipping to U S lower48. still in box with all parts and literature. I can post pics.

Used a non-computer AOD in my 53 and love it. No tunnel mods, bought a used Speedway Adapter and new Econoline 6 cylinder flex plate. Also used a TransGo valve body kit (under $25.00) that corrects shift pattern for low geared rear ends. Modified trans x-member so it is a bolt-in. Had a new speedo cable made and was in business. Yes, a trans oil cooler and Lokar linkage was installed. A stock column shift tree was modified. To line up gear selector, had a plastic shop make a dial. Amazon has it for $308, so I'm gonna drop my price to 175., still includes shipping.

Pretty much my situation at present. I bought a 4R70W, built for my stroker engine specifically and Baumann controller as a package deal from trans rebuild shop several years ago but haven't put body on frame or hooked controller in yet, need to do front suspension rebuild, disc brakes etc first. Want finished rolling ch***is before body goes on, so I keep plodding along.
