4speed tranny

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Daniel Almendarez, Sep 16, 2021.

  1. My 46 Chevy truck has the original torque tube drive line. A differential spe******t told me it would be better just to replace the differential with a more modern one. That would require to change the ****** to accept an open drive shaft. Any suggestions? I still have the 216 straight 6. Also would an automatic work?

Not sure on the 46 but from 48-up truck, the bell housing flange pattern is the same as the 55-up car and truck. You will need to look. By photos on e-bay of a 41-46 truck transmission face, I believe they are very close. The flywheel will need to be removed if the bells are different. It comes out the bottom.
For a std trans anything 55-up will use an open drive for the later rear end.
Buffalo Enterprises in Oregon makes a plate for late model automatic transmissions. The plate will also accept the std trans bell housings, not sure on the motor mounts or trans mounts. I’m sure they will need to be fabricated.
At 90 hp an automatic is not going to be very efficient unless you keep a rear end gear near the 4.11 you probably have.
