Very cool...Magnum was there to solve a crime no doubt...the Moonliner ranks up there as one of my all time favorites...thanks Ryan and thanks Mazooma1
curiosity got the better of me...explanation of 555 cigarettes http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/State_Express_555
I think sellick is chief mechanic. See at about 20 seconds in, he points at that bolt, and the other guy cranks it with the wrench.
I would like to see Selleck drive a souped up pack of 555 down the salt. But alas he settled for a Ferrari 308 in Hawaii. Makes you want to be smoking at the 6 mile marker for the extra boost.
Awesome video, but after watching it, I now have the sudden urge to buy a Ferrari 308, and move to Hawaii to fight crime.
Bitchin. Always dug Jocko's streamliner. My favorite cigarrette commercial is the Flintstones/Winston, LOL. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Bvt8skgm2l8
Now, why would one choose to replace an Allison motor with a BBC? I am having a hard time understanding any good reason for that.
I seem to remember reading that it was used in a soda commercial too. Rootbeer, yoohoo... anyone have pics? Sam
Nice post!! It's nice seeing a ad without side effects being said for half of the damn commercial like now, even though it is for smoking, ha
I quit smoking 9.5 months ago...I enjoy the idea of a smoke in the garage some times. I felt like a hazard on the salt with a smoke with all that racing fuel around. Thanks for the video!
Tom seleck dont have nothing on speed racer!!!!!!!!!! Looks like speeds brother racer x's car!!!!!!!!!!
I think it was Kirin beer (from Japan). There is a pic of the shoot in the Moon equipped book, but I couldn't find any pics on the internet.
First time post here. I was searching for this commercial. I am one of the crew in the background. We did this when I was 17 and now I'm 50 but it seems like yesterday. What a kick it was.
Ok, for the historical record, how many of these cars did Jocko build, this one and the black one Don Garlits has, plus others, or are there repops out there as well? How many different paint combinations and engines were in this car?
As I remember, Jocko built a smaller version in the 80's as kind of a comeback. But I never saw them again after that. As far as the Moonliner goes, I pulled the allison v-12 out the car and shipped it to a farmer in the midwest to be used in a pulling vehicle in the early 70's. Dean then put in a ZL-1 chevy motor and used the car as a promotional tool. Gary Gabelich did most of the driving, but Dean would drive every so often until he broke his elbow by smacking it on the dash while pulling the parachute release.
