Hey everyone, I was talking with another HAMBer about a tranny I am buying from him to put in my 50 chevy truck, and was talking about other options to bolt up to my 292 inline 6. I am putting a T5 behind it as we speak, but he was talking about a 5 speed out of a 90's chevy V6 truck... Has anyone ever mated something like that together?? I know people use the T5's all day long, but he had a valid idea I think... I would imagine the 5 speed out of the 90's chevy would work without having to use a spacer or cutting down the your shaft like I hear so many people doing. So please let me know if anyone has done this or know if this would work.... Thanks!
The transmission in question is a 5 speed with integral bellhousing, unlike the T-5, which uses a seperate bell. I've seen it referred to by a couple different names, one of which is Getrag and I don't remember the other. They do come in two different gear ratio sets, the main difference being in just how low "low" is. They are larger and heavier (the main case area, not just because they have an integral bellhousing) than a T-5. Typically they were in heavier S-10/S-15 V6 pickups and fullsize 1/2 tons. Suggest you do alittle more research on these units before you make a decision about which will work best for your application. Just to add a bit more info to confuse matters further...I have two of the GM 5 spds described above, but I am using an Aisin 5 speed as found in two wheel drive Jeep Cherokees and Dodge Dakotas (known as the AX-15). Novak Engineering, an adapter maker with lots of engine/tranny combos, mostly for the 4 x 4 crowd, makes a beautiful adapter plate to bolt the Aisin AX-15 to a GM pattern bellhousing. I have bought their adapter and it is very nicely done. The Aisin is stronger than a T-5. I am putting it behind a Buick Straight 8 of 270 cubes (bored 263) in my '40 Super. Ray
The later GM small pickups - the Colorado/Canyon - and the Saturn/Sky roadsters use an Aisin AR5 transmission. It's got a pretty deep (too deep, really) first gear and the gear spacing's pretty wide but otherwise it's a nice gearbox. Bellhousing pattern is GM Ecotec - the Ecotec fours used all over the GM line in various forms and sizes, the truck fives, the 54-degree British V6, '96-up Saab B234/B235/B204/B205 engines and I'm not sure what else.
another transmission to look at is a 833a 4 speed. it is a 3speed with 4th being an over drive . they came in 81-87 chevy trucks . great trans. the gear ratos are very close to a 700r4 trans.
It will work. Just like bolting an automatic behind your trans but with a clutch since you already have the integral bellhousing. I believe these trans are called the NV3500. There is a lot of information on them out there. Not nearly as desirable as the T5 and not as much aftermarket support as far as adapters, shifters, internal parts etc.
Im about to pull a similar 5 speed thats been in a 56 dump truck for years, ill try to get some pics for you as i take it out...
i recently put a borg-warner t5 with od behind my 235 inline 6 i bought the tranny and the conversion kit from:bendtsens speed gems 763-767-4480 bob@transmissionadapters.com ask for bob the owner he has kits to put any trans behind any motor
You will have to have a hydralic master cylinder to us the trans with intregal bellhousing. If you want to change to hanging pedals thats not a problem and early 60's pickups had a one piece clutch and brake master cylinder combo.
Kinda. there are several different of these integrated 5-speeds used by GM. generally the s-10's use a true hydraulic throwout bearing. and generally the full sized 1500 series uses a clutch fork with hydraulic actuation. there are Getrags and New Ventures. generally you want to stick with later ones which are stronger and improved. a 95 NV3500 is what I am running in by 40 pickup with a cable actuated clutch. I keep saying generally because there are so many variations. shifter position is different too. The getrag I first acquired would have placed the shifter too far back, which is why I used the NV3500
I'm using this trans in my 46 Ford hot rod. Olds 350 power with a 3:73 rear. Expect very good results. Anyone know the ratio's spacing?
If its the NV3500, i have one in my DD, first is a little low, all others near perfect. My dd also has 3.73 rear gear and 28" tall tires. Make sure to use GM synchromesh oil part # 12345349 in it or synchro life will be dramatically shortened. Also, I hope you dont like speed shifting, cause the NV3500 dont. Dave
here's a link http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/New_Venture_Gear_3500_transmission i've got an nv 3500 in my 55 with a 348 in front of it and i love it. it's got a looow 1st gear so i run a 3:08 rear gear, couple that with overdrive and you're cruisin'
Pre 88 S-10 with a V6 will have the shifter in a good spot as well as having a gear drive for speedo instead of sending unit.
