Do you have a heated garage to work in? How much free time do you have to dedicate to working on the car? Do you want to drive it in the spring? Lots of hours for a job like that, unless you're a pro.

51 Merc CT- love the animated photo chop:cool:

  2. Yeah drive yours all this year, and then work it next fall. Don't drive yours three times like me and then take it to the body shop.

Chaos, it's been there over a year. My guy is short handed but the car did in his defense have a lot of hidden sloppy problems.

That's the problem for the original poster. Once you start digging in, you will find so many problems you never accounted for.

I agree with "51 MERC-CT".I think it would be the smoothest, less bullshit approach..........Mike

It's hard to see your situation without seeing it from the side. I agree with the others,by waiting for better weather to mess with it. The suggestion to lower the bottom of the window sounds right,IF that's what will give you the look you want. Really hard to make a judgement based on that 3/4 shot. There's alot to consider...like the re-paint,interior removal, cost to fix it. Might as well fix those quarter windows while your at it.

  5. i will melt the ice off of it tomorrow and get a better picture:)

'51 Merc CT nailed it here IMO. With the animation for extra credit! Thats exactly how I plan to fix Zombie 51's, cept we are switching his wasted '51 window frame for a '50.

  7. i'm not convinced thats the way to go, the C pillar ends up looking to thick when done that way. plus, the arc of the roof them has to be monkeyed with, which i would prefer not to have to do.
leaving the top fixed where it is already and letting the bottom of the window drop down a bit is the way to go, IMO:D
mind you, i am not a pro.

just like the others suggested you can lower the bottom quite a bit and roll up a new piece and would look something like this or modify what you have..

i don't think the intent of the bondo statement was to slap any on, it was to dig it out (get the bondo out) and see what the foundation looked like. it does sound a little like "break out the insta-fix" at first read.
i like the pvc pipe idea for seeing the "flow" of a line.

i don't thinks it's quite as bad as it COULD have been, given the age of the build. damn cool car regardless.

I don"t think it looks all that bad. I would leave it alone and drive it. Or maybe put a carson top on it?

the crown appears to be the worst thing I see. cut the pillers loose and lean the rear window down then redo the roof to lose the cap. you wont even have to work the windshield or A pillers.

The method itself or using the different window? The roof has to be monkeyed with the allow the window to fit in and not look out of place. JMO.

  15. i have my model a in the garage right now
    bigger garage coming soon:D

  16. it needs a repaint for sure, the paint is old, lots of cracking. the flames will be gone for sure, but the pink may stay.:)
heres a shot of the front, you can see the cracks better in it...

If the roof bugs you now, it always will until you fix it. That's what your attention will be drawn to every time you look at it. You'll have that sinking feeling of "man what a cool car EXCEPT...". If you fix it, fix it right.

Personally, for the work involved with my limited skills, I'd live with the back window the way it is. I'd turn my attention and effort towards fixing the bucket seats and painted grill first. But that's just me. Still a very cool car, pink flames and all.

Be prepared for a bigger fix then moving the window a little. I would bet that there is a fair amount of filler in the roof. The depth of the roof above the rear quarter window and the height of the quarter window don't look right either. I would look at lowering the crown of the roof above the rear window. To me, the problem on Merc roofs is the hump in the roof ahead of the rear window. Repositioning the window doesn't get rid of the hump.

Be prepared for alot of work when you decide to tackle the problems with the paint. More filler may be hiding other problems. I would probably drive it awhile first.

  21. I can never figure out why the gutter channel is removed on Mercs.
To me, it just looks so wrong like something is missing.
Anyone else feel the same way or is it just me?

reworked the ends to match at top and bottom.
