I have heard that the rear seats out of a 1964-68 Thunderbird will drop right into a 50 merc. rear hangers are same. Has anyone done this and if so is it right no mods. I think they would look as good as they curve around slightly.
Meaure, the top of them is fairly wide. I have one set in a '50 Chevy and not sure I'm going to use it as it's a tad too wide at the top.
64-66 are the good looking ones, I have a set in my '53 Ford. You really have to rework the package tray area to get it to look right, it's not a bolt-in swap. Looks great when done properly, but not a snap right in type deal. Also, the driveshaft tunnel opening is way different on the T-bird, so regardless of how well it fits, you'll have to redo that area or recover the whole seats.
doing it now on a 51. NOT using the stock floor. it is all custom built. But so far I have to build a new package tray ( show car. would rather have all new parts made than blend the old stuff and new stuff ). The seat will not have very much support if not. As well, for the arm rest, I am adding more bracing behind the seat for it. Other wise, it does seem to fit fairly well. Even the width.
Now that I have figured out the back seat, To you guys with 50 mercs what vehicles have you pulled seats out for the buckets seats. I have combed the junk yards for them but have been unable to find any that would be confortable for those long rides.
That looks nice. What I am looking for is what car & year are good cars to pull some buckets out of that will be comfortable for long rides. To those of you that have done this to 50 mercs. I can guess that there have been plenty who have done this lately. I need enough room for a decent center console.
doing that now as well. Perfect fit IMO. I will post pix soon as I get the chance. Very busy in the shop recently
choptvan, thanks for reply would love to see some pics. Seeing your doing this now I am sure to be able to get some support and advice on this application.
not trying to blow you off dude! Just been stupid busy. So much going on. Soon as I get to it, I will shoot a few photos your way.
I am sure they will fit, just wondering how comfy they will be. Also to those who have used the back seats out of the t-birdfs did you also use the package tray and how did you modify the area under the window to get it looking right. Any pointers ?
Good luck fitting those cool seats. They can be done of you want it bad enough. My bro is putting them in a 54 Chevy and they are bad to the boner!! ~sololobo~
Well I just picked up a set of seats plus package tray out of a 64. At first I just bought the rear seats but after getting them home and cleaning them, they were in perfect shape black, no rips or wear I went back and picked up the front buckets same shape. The drivers bucket is power and after spraying all the mechanics I tested the motor and all worked. Now starts the project of fiting the package tray. I will have to build up that area to get a flat mounting. Any ideas out there. Someone who has done this, who can give me some direction would be great.
Here's an update. I am finished putting in the rear seat from the 64 t-bird. It looks awesome. It does take some modification to the floor, as in a platform to get the seat up to match thee back section . Also had to weld some supports to hang back panels. I tried the bucket seats. They are short and just didn't look right, I ended up pulling a nice set out of a chev. impala they even had the same pattern as the back seat. I am now trying to design a center console out of plywood then will cover with vinyl.
