arrrrgh ! that grille is so fuckin kool ! 55 Desoto is one of the koolest to me ! don't look bad with the two big teeth either ! ya kill me ! another thing i can't wait to see fited !
been following it for a while now. love to see just how much "extra" work goes into these chops, all the internal bracing and finishings. keep it up!!! is that 51 Buick next? i got one that ive been itching to chop, not right away but it will happen one day. Yaril
Flop, the wing vents are almost impossible to bend without kinking them. The way I did mine was to do a bunch of pie cuts to get a nice flow.
31 5 window i dont know how much i chopped it the only certain thing i know is there is 4 inches taken out fo the a pillars the rest was fitted to look good. sorry to be vague but thats just how it worked out. i couldnt get the window to lay the way i wanted it with it still attatched at the bottom so i cut it the whole way but it is still gonna be covered with stailess so it looks like it was never cut from its orig place just layed down. theres gonna be some crazy stuff goin on up front i believe 50 caddy bumper that comes out to a big v in stock form as does the desoto grill so i bought a 53 caddy off of gator i think im gonna use the front of the 53 caddy hood to get the hood to come out to a v unlike the flat pontiac hood. tyler...that kid hasnt been to the garage to work on that buick in 2 years only action it sees is the sparks from my grinder and welder nads thanks for the tip man. how nice do ya gotta get the vent wings so they look nice when they are chromed . ive never done anything that got chromed before im only 23 this is my first very serious build. the door was a joke we put on our buddys front lawn. then i needed it back !! thanks for the feedback guys more updates soon gotta rewire my 47 chevy so i can get it back on the road before i start on this again.
...i was wondering about the wing window bendation (yeah i made that word up) i have to do mine soon and was thinking of putting one between two pieces of plywood. then pressing it mildly in the vise. after it's firm in the vise trying to whack it with a rubber mallet. you with me? that way it wouldn't flare out like Nads is talking about. what do you think?
that metal on the bend is still gonna have to go somewhere i think thats why you are gonna need the pie cut nad mentions to remove some so the bend can take place with out the kink.. just my.02
i've got one to test my idea out on. i just don't want to have to deal with re-chroming. but he's probably right.
Great work Flop. All of the little extras like the package shelf, inner structures, moving the rear windows back, pancaking the trunk, straight B-pillars, rounded door corners, all make the final product so much nicer. Excellent work. I am looking forward to more of your progress pics.
i doubt heat would be any good for chrome either so damned if ya do damned if ya dont. but i know i want me some shiny vent wings thanks 38 chevy .. i think if ya chop a car there should be more dont then just a chop.
well i blew off re wiring the 47 to finish this side of the car off completley. gotta wait till it stops rainin to get it outside for the big side profile shot ..... heres how i did my vent wing windows and yes they are steel to my disbelief. heres where we started it didnt fit so well so i drilled out the rivets that held the hinnge on and took the nut off the springy thing at the bottom now we are gettin somewhere hinge needs moved find out where ya like it and put it there
this looks great huh? your thinkin what the hell just happened right? hinge tacked in .then i used the end of the orig vent wing. it is tacked above the hinge . then off a parts wing window i cut the end off of it for the new end . fits liek a glove haaah! takin shape. hey marty see how the metal still kinked even with pie cuts so imagine trying to bend it with out any more tomorrow im goin to sleeep!!
Flop... I can't say enough how helpful the "How to" component of this thread is... it's a tech post with a story! Thanks!
these were not to bad to keep straight small tack etc etc i used the die grinder with roloc with 100 grit to knock the weld down and the rest was done with a file. lots of tedious work but it payed off in the end little piece of the almost finished product thanks preacher i also thought about the play doe marty but like pot metal i didnt know if you could weld to it with out it melting and bowing apart !! they wernt to bad man give em a go!! finishing polishing them up to around 600 grit then they should be ready to go to the chrome shop.
Thats awsome. My dad has a stock 50 fast back, but this looks way cooler. Any more pixs of your progress? Great job so far.
Holy shit, nevermind! I didnt notice the 16 pages of follow up. You are a fucking master Flop! If you dont do this for a living, you should. Cant wait to see more. Really makes you think twice about cuttin up your car. Props
i gotta a window cleaning biz tin indian .i just play a car builder here on the hamb ha!! thats how they come from the factory poser go take a look at one. thanks paintworks did ya get the pitman arm?
i did, thanx. looks like i will have to modify it. it end up to close to the drag link. just another excuse to use the new plasma cutter!!!!!!
Damn internet, can't tell the difference between curiosity and sarcasam. I've got no knowlege of pontiac and their placement of things. I should have figured out by the rest of your work on this car that you know what you're doing. So far I like the look of the car and the direction you are taking it. Keep up the good work and the excellent posts. Looking forward to seeing more of both.
I didn't chrome my vent window frames, Flop, they need more work to get em to that point, I just painted mine, but they look pretty good.
i got mine prettty close right now they are sanded out to 220 with a da i heard you have to take em up to 600 so you can really see whats goin on. i have some pits to fill in where the chrome pitted into the steel other then thstat just more sanding. any pics of your car nads ive neverseen one of it before?
