When I built my coupe(see album) I was given a '50 pontiac rear so that is what i used. Still there! Can someone give me specs(rato, etc) and what year parts are interchangeable. I know donor car was a standard shift and I believe it was a six. As usual, thanx for your help guys and gals. larry
If they are the same as 50 olds, I used a ,I think, 39 pontiac 3.90 gear. It was good then, but parts might be hard /expensive to come by. It should be 5 on 5 bolt pattern.
Yeah, it is a 5 on 5 running an adapter to use 4 /3/4 torque thrusts. For some reason I was led to believe differed from olds but don't know-reason for the thread. thanx for reply
Is there any way to make it more hi way friendly? I am probably just being pig headed about it and should just put in a later model rear. I put it together in 1959 and is kinda part of the family. I am sure the first time it breaks I'll can it! I guess I just need a kick in the butt! Sure someone out there will oblige! thanx as usual!
55-56 Pontiac will have the same 10 spline axles with more highway gears like a 3:08 for an automatic car. The 56 will have a differant normal style yolk unlike the mechanics type u joint on the earlier rears so that will need swapped over. Olds are 16 spline, if you do find an Olds rear just swap out the side and spider gears.
Pontiac built the rear ends for Olds.1939-52 Olds 39-56 Pontiac are the same.49 Olds auto trans is 3.23 50 auto is 3.42. Old pontiac auto trans cars tend to geared higher 3.23-3.08. In my 50 Olds I run locked 4.30 with 29 spline 57 axles. Side gears are the same from 39 -64.
"wastedchildhood" thanx for info. as 48ford pointed out if mine is a 3.90 will a move to 3.23 be enough or do I need to find a 3.08? I am an old fart and really not looking for whiplash at traffic light!
