I'm customizing the dash in my '50 Shoebox. At first I wasn't sure about cutting holes in the dash, but so far I'm happy with the results.

I used some pvc from Home Depot which is reinforced with several brackets I welded on the backside. I'll have to work the contours some with filler.

The guages are a retro style from New Vintage USA. The tach is a a classic SUN. And the steering wheel is from a '63 Caddi.

  2. Looks kinda cool so far. Question thou. Are the white housings pvc? How are you going to mold that in?

  3. Is the car in the Avitar the same one with the dash? If I owned that car I'm quite sure I would not be doing that to it. Just the wrong generation stuff for my personal liking. Maybe it works with the total package but the dash alone,,,,it's not for me. Sorry.
    Remember, I'm just one guy.

Yes, they are sections of 4" pvc that are held in place by metal brackets from the back of the dash. It's very sturdy... they are a permanent part of the dash.

I'll eventually use body filler to finish the contour of the smaller pvc openings to better match that of the original center opening.

  5. not sure about the pvc thing. but if your going custom i would remove the clock and smooth the opening. it looks out of place now with the three gauges.

  6. Being a body man for 38 yrs i can say nothing is going to work to mold that in. Sorry to burst your bubble but it just won't bond to pvc. Interesting concept thou

  7. I like your wheel but not to keen on the guages , sometimes the original is often the best. Not changes for the sake of it..

I hear you... I was hoping something like SEM Plastic Adhesion Promoter would allow the filler, primer, etc to stick to the pvc.

If it doesn't work, I'll have to come up with some metal inserts to replace the pvc. Just wanted to give it a shot with the pvc idea.

  9. To save yourself a lot of grief, find a shop with slip role's and have them roll you some 18 gauge the same dia as the P.V.C. and then weld them in. If you were close I'd be glad to do it for ya.
