We have a 67 Caddy Coupe DeVille with a 429 and switch pitch trans. There is a very nice looking 76 500 Caddy motor in the H.A.M.B cl***ified section. We'd like to pick it up and drop it into the 67 Caddy. It appears that the motor mounts are different, but we can use a welder and/or drill to deal with that. The part we can't figure out is the transmission. Does the Cad 429 have it's own odd bolt pattern? Do we need to get another trans? How about the flex plate? It seems like there might be an adaptor out there.. but we can't seem to find anything for sure. Any insight into this swap would be greatly appreciated!
It is my understanding that the Cadillac 429 used the early style bolt patern. When Cadillac changed over to the 472 they switched to the BOP patern. If you were closer I would offer to buy your trans for use in my 57 Coupe DeVille. Carmak Riverside, Iowa
I believe you will also need a Oilpan from a Eldorado to make this work I think these guys sells a pan that will work http://www.500cid.com/ Dawg
This may help, found it on a Caddy forum, http://forums.500cid.com/viewtopic.php?t=712 I think late model Caddys with 472/500's use a TH400. CBB
Thank you for the help guys! We were checking all over the place yesterday, and the 429 Caddy does have it's own wacky bolt pattern! FYI this is the response we got from "The Cad Company". (I added bold for the trans question) The motor mounts are easy. The stock 500 mounts attach to the frame the same as the stock 429 mounts, just an inch or so further forward, so you just make a new set of holes in the frame. The stock 429 fan shroud can be aligned with the stock 500 fan via a drill and some washers. The 429 bell housing pattern is unique to the 429, as far as I know. I have trans adapters to use the 429 version of the TH400 behind the 500 engine. The bolt pattern for the torque converter to flex plate is standard TH400, so the stock 500 flex plate will work. If the 429 had a front sump oil pan (should be) then the stock front sump (non-Eldorado)472/500 oil pan will fit. The stock non-Eldo exhaust manifolds should fit, as well. You will probably need our special ch***is oil pump to avoid cutting the frame or running a remote filter. That's about it. It is really a very easy swap, as those things go, if you have the right parts in hand before you start.
