Damn! Strange how life seems to get in the way of these projects. But I am committed to make this bucket of bolts go down the road, under its own power. Had lots of inspiration lately.
Despite the owner being a little shy on cash, have decided to just keep plugging away at all the details. As long as I get payed for the parts, I am happy. Made a promise to myself, not to start on my Starfire convertible until this is out of the driveway. More motivation.
Made up some misc. brackets to synchronize the shift linkage and make the "push style" gas pedal work. The latter is still in the rough stages. But hell, gotta start somewhere. Have the modified drive-shaft in and the trans all hooked up and plumbed to the radiator. Dropped the gas tank, of course it was almost full with 5 year old gas(but kept it from rusting!!). Back in the car and all plumbed to the fuel pump. (need to add a filter at the tank.
So happy! I can actually sit in the drivers seat, start the engine and drop it in drive and the rear wheels spin. Sounds *****in' with open exhaust. Going to replace all the wheel cylinders and master (shoes where all like new!) Try and plumb the radiator or just have Dave spring for a new aluminum one(only $350) and she should be good to go. Will definitly have to film it going arouind the block. should give the neighbors something to talk about. No worries, I am quiet guy most of the time and my yard is immaculate.:D

I was going to do a 472 in my 55 until with a M-22 untl I did a little searching and asking. It better be one hell of a strong trans to hold the 472-500 or it will be in pieces

  7. I thought the muncie's were meant to handle big power. no?

Yeah they were but if you add on the Edelbrock intake it brings the torque up to 540 lbs. and everybody I asked here or at shows and swaps and on the Caddy forum said it wouldn't handle it if you run it hard.

I put a 472 caddy into a 78 bonniville wagon. used the stock exhaust and streatched the crossover pipe to fit. Had to modify the pan and drill the flex plate. I had a turbo 350. The original motor was a 350 buick. I drove it for about 4 years with no trouble.

I have a 500 with TH400 in my '41 Caddy. I remember I offset the engine to the right an inch or so. Also, used a '75 Corvette front clip, a remote oil filter and block hugger headers. The motor is hopped up a little. The car has mucho power and drives great. I do have a cooling problem, though. Something that I been living with.

Hmmm.. I've just had an offer of a '73 472 w/ 400 trans from a he****. It needs some work (dirty) but was told it pulled the he**** just fine, no smoke, and shifted well. The he**** looked like a combo of rust and bondo, with very little metal left. So... it's been crushed. But the engine and trans combo seems ok, just dirty.

Looks like I may take him up on the trans and see about getting an adapter from wilcap or someone similar, as the issues with the oil pump and pan, and oil filter, may prove to be beyond my abilities.

Although... I may take em and hold on for another project. Could make a nice powerplant for something down the road.

It would appear that some folks out there have crammed a 472 or 500 into a 59-64 Cadillac. So... any input is greatly appreciated

    Peace
    Chris

I saw one (500 cad) at the kc stop of the power tour in a chevette. was about 1997 iirc. crazy, but it fit.

  17. I put one in a 57 deville pretty tight fit,had to slice and dice the crossmember just to fit the oil filter relocation deal.Sure did look good when it was done.

I put a 472 in a 37 Fiat that's listed for sale on the Racingjunk board now with a SBC in it. The motor blew after I sold it. It was a handful to drive. Not much problem it install but it was in an open frame at the time. I worked with Lunati and they speical ground a monster hydraulic cam for it, Part number 30000.

There was a guy at New England Dragway in the 70's who had a black Eldorado with double 500's. 1 up front and one out back. It was fast and had plenty of traction. Burnouts were pretty fun to watch.

Boomosby, love the retro fit jobs in the '60 and the '57 DeVilles. Would love to drive one of them to get a feel for the performance. This engine is tight, so should move along well.
So eager to finish this project, but owner just does not have enough money right now. Just got done rebuilding the control arms. Found out they offered two different diameters that year. (1 1/2 and 1 7/16") Fleetwood was the larger one. Rock Auto had them cheap. Owner is a starving musician and this is the prime time of the year for "Gigs", so should be able to swing the bread for a new aluminum radiator soon. After that it's going to the exhaust shop for a custom "Y" pipe. Should be able to be driven at that point.
Also had to trim the center opening of the X-frame to accomodate the lower driveshaft postion. BTW...had a local driveshaft shop shorten and adapt the TH400 Yoke.
Dave actually moved it up and down the driveway a few weeks ago. First time he has ever driven this car in the 4 yrs since owning it.

Sanderson CAD500/600 headers, 368 oil filter housing, billet flywheel for small bolt pattern torque converters (OEM's crack if you drill them, BTW I still have 1 flywheel hanging on my wall (grin)), 368 also had TBI setup if you want fuel inj.

thats is very good to here!!! am glad it is still moving along, seems like you are getting closer, its amazing how long these things take. couple of questions if you dont mind..

    1) what did you do ab the oil filter and teh cross memeber? how did you get by that hurdle? do you have pics?

    2) what ****** did you use? was it i a long tail or short tail? and why exactly did you have to section the frame?

350 for a new aluminum radiator sounds liek a deal in my boook!!!
