I'm so new to this old motor, did GM really make this 235 motor with no oil filter? From what I have researched, it only has this oil line on the driver's side engine block that goes towards the front of the motor and connects to the head on the passenger side of the motor??
Oil filters were optional in those days. Most got them, but if you wanted to be cheap you could get it without. There are a lot of aftermarket housings that were available, where you might find an engine that originally never had one, now has one. The engines are set up for bypass filters, which isn’t full flow like today’s engines.
Ok. So I can test run the engine just the way this engine is? Sorry for the questions but I'm still learning
An oil filter wasn’t even standard equipment on the 265 sbc when it was first released in 1955, although it was an option.
Yes you are fine to run it as is. I didn't run the #s but like mentioned it looks like a 216 or early 235 splash oiler at a glance. Not going to win any races, but they're tough as nails & plenty of torque.
With that T fitting and valve, my guess is the rocker arm oiling in the block is plugged and that is an auxiliary oil line to the rocker shaft.
Right, I had a 55 265 that had an external filter at the front of the engine--on a bracket that looked like a piece of old 3/8" steel bent into a U and cut with a cutting torch. I don't think it did a thing.
