My name is Tom,I'm 64',and I love old cars, and still like to rock&roll! I live in New Lenox,Il. Having trouble deciding whether to keep the 6 cyl.in my 51 Chevy or go the small block /automatic route. Also should I keep the stock independent front suspension or inst.one of the Mustang 2 kits.Decisions, decisions!Money is a factor, but I still would like a car that would be a reliable cruiser.I do like the sound of those 6cyl.with a split manifold, but the small block is very tempting also.I,m sure some of you have had the same delemma.I would like to hear from you and what choices you made. Thanks!

Welcome frm another owner of a wide-hipped Chevy!

The choices on your car are your own deal... but I really like the 350 and 4-speed in my 52. I put an MII in there too, and it's nice, but I can't say that it was a huge improvement over the stock front end. If I ever build another one, I'd probably do the MII route again... but mainly because I can walk up to pretty much any parts counter and get what I need right there. (Same for SBC).

There's mucho info all over the HAMB regarding pretty much anything you'd ever want to do with these cars... do a search on whatever topic you are looking for.

  4. Welcome from another '51 guy! Tough question to answer...kinda like asking what makes a chick hot...there are a lot of right answers, but to each his own. Personally, I went with the MII kit, built SBC, TH350, bags, and other necessary stuff to make that swap work. I'd do it again in a heartbeat, but I've also seen some sick hopped-up 6cyls. If you haven't found it yet, http://www.50chevy.com will be one of your favorite sites (at least it's one of mine). Like slide said, you'll probably find all of the answers to your questions here. I've stopped reading other forums 'cause this place has everything.

Welcome! I went the 350 route in my 52, But the sixes are fun also. It will be a call you'll have to make. Either way you cant lose, just get it on the road and drive!!! Good luck.:)

I have a 49 that I plan to keep the 6 cylinder and a 50 that will get a Chevy small block. I hope to have the best of both worlds. Just bought these about a month ago and they are behind two other projects for the time being. You will find numerous opinions on which way to go, just do what's right for you.
