    Morning all,

Finally managed to get the manual transmission out of my '51 Styleline yesterday.

It seemed to shift ok when it was in the car but while I had the torque tube and shaft off to fit an Okie Bush, I thought I'd give it a clean up and gasket job.

Now I have it out the car, there seems a fair bit of up-down side-side movement on the input shaft, does anyone know what the tolerance is on that?

I know I should prob just order the bearing and change it out, but i'm tight hahaha.

    Thanks!!!

    J

Found the bearing this side of the pond for very reasonable money so just pushed the ****on, better be safe than sorry eh!!

I guess next question is how far am I going to have to strip this to change it?

There is usually a lot of play at the front end of the input shaft, even with a bearing that is in good condition. Since the end of the shaft is located by the pilot bushing in the end of the crankshaft, it doesn't matter. It does matter that the bearing is smooth and not excessively worn, but they generally don't wear out unless it's run without oil, gets moisture inside, etc.

To learn how to replace it, did you read the shop manual?

Thanks for the heads up on the play, if I don't need to change the bearing at least i'll have a spare and it only cost me £12 ;)

Upon quickly skimming the digital version there, I might end up leaving that bearing for now.

I hate to think how I would find an appropriate tool to pull that clutch shaft out.
