51 Chevy rear axle what did you use?

Discussion in 'The Hokey Ass Message Board' started by Fat ASS Whitewalls, Apr 7, 2006.

  1. What's the width of the stock one? I need to replace the stock one for a guy with an open drive. Don't have the car here yet, so I can't take any measurements. The new one has to be Chevy also, only one bolt pattern on the wheels. Thanks, Dean

  2. Chevy p***enger car I ***ume?

55-57 Chevy, 70-81 Camaro, 74-79 Nova, and S10 4x4 can all be made to work if you redrill the hole for the pin on the spring perch. S10 is a tad narrower, the rest are the same or witin an inch or so.

Lots of info here: www.chevytalk.org (in the 49-54 section).

early 60's ford 8" from a fairlane works as well. If I remeber correctly your shooting for 60" stock wheel mounting face to wheel mounting face. The 8" is about 58" so you can slide a 1" wider rim or if you need to put in an adapter to run chevy wheels your all set.

I am not sure what the dimensions are but I know my dad used a 55 - 57 chevy on his and it fit right. He bought a set of standard offset 7" wheels for the back and it all fit with no problem.
