Ok so looking for a basic answer I think. I have a 51 Chevy three on the tree. I have a power glide rear end in my back yard. Can I just switch out the third members? Is the torque tube ends the same for the transmissions?

yes, you can just change the third members. the torque tubes are the same. I made this change on my 52 chev in the 80's , makes freeway driving a lot easier

Definitely, and it's the easier way. Now if your rear end (49-50) had Huck brakes, then it would be best to swap the entire torque-tube/housing/axles. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
