My heater core is leaking on my '51 and it's not looking good. Shoebox Central says they are out of stock. Is there a replacement core or a different core I can use in its place? I'd appreciate any help Thanks fellas -Andrew
I took my leaky old stock core to Mac's radiator shop in Portland and they just took off the end caps and installed a new core to them. Been working fine since.
These guys recored the heater in my '54 Ranch Wagon. Cost about the same as an off shore one from Concours in Carson City. http://fontanaradiator.net/
I agree. Take it to a good radiator shop and have it re-cored at about half the price of a good new one.
take it out an see where its leaking, I've clean flushed and soldered up cracks and pin holes in probably 20 copper brass heater cores over the years. Pretty easy to do. once you solder it up, get a long metal valve stem that you can clamp into a piece of hose, you can plug one side up, fill it full of water, put the hose with the valve stem on the other side and then put a little air pressure on it to test before you ever go back together. test it up to the pressure of your radiator cap, 7 to 16 pounds usually. if it holds you are good, if it leaks clean the spot and solder it up again. the old ones are way better than the new garbage aluminum stuff out there.
