hey guys, one of the big give aways on a shoebox ford that its a 51 is the giant chrome "spears" leading to the tail lights much like a 49 and 50 in shape but chrome. not having one in front of me i thought i would ask you guys, some of whome may actualy have one sitting there shop or yard. can you remove the chrome leading up to the rear lights and it looks like the prior years? or is the intire ridge on the 51 made up out of the chrome?? if so it seems like taking it off would suplie a good start on a custom tail light treatment. just thought id ask tim
When you remove the chrome "windsplit" from a 51 you'll have a 49-50 windsplit with holes in it. Hope this helps. Billy
The tail lights are also wider on the 51. When the chrome spear is removed, you'll expose the outermost part of the tail light bezel. You'd have to build out the spear in metal to meet the 51 bezel, or simply french in some 49-50 lights and you don't need to mess with the spear!
There are three holes under there that need to be filled. Then you will want to remove the bezel, if you are going to do the custom tail light thing. If your spears/bezels are in good shape let me know! TDC
