damn that's looking good... hell of a job on the hood, there

there was a gasser Henry J down the road from where i grew up outside of pittsburgh. once in a while the dude would bring it out and just rumble down the road... then open it up when he got to the main road. it'd echo through the woods and you could hear it banging through the gears with fury. i was 6 or 7. that was the car that got me into gassers.

    Any pics of your J?????????????

  7. Do you remember the king pin centers on it ? I just got a line on a axle and was just out measuring things up. Now of course I just changed springs and ordered a king pin kit for the stock front suspension, never fails.

I do. The C/C on the kingpins is 48". I had a different axle that i was going to use at first. Ended up not wanting to spend the money they wanted to put the disc brake conversion on it. So went this direction instead. That axle was also 48". You could probably go up to a 50" C/C as long as you aren't going with wide front wheels. I have a set of 15x4 on it now. Also keep in mind clearance on fender well headers if you are going with them.

  9. Thanks, it is a 48", the same width in my t-bucket which I measured against and it all looked great.

Talking with my Dad about his HJ, he said i was about that same age 5-7yrs old when he sold his car. I don't remember this, but Dad said when the guy who bought it came to pick it up i stood in the drive way and cried and had me a moment. LOL I remember the car being parked on the east side of the house and playing in the car. Like i told Dad should have known from that day forward what was to come. :D

  11. Very nice work!!!! Please tell me you are gonna leave the wheel opening stock....I can't believe there are any J's left with stock wheel openings...haha...just my humble opinion....R~R

That is absolutely perfect, and I'm so envious of your metal working skills! Wish I could do anything even close with metal!

I respect your opinion and everyone else who has posted. I wish i could tell you that they were going to stay stock, but they aren't. Since i am doing a copy of my dads car i want the outside of the car to look as close as possible.
I have added a few small changes though. I will add a finished fender lip on the rear where dads was just cut off and left sharp.

Had to take some time away from the build to do a few things around the house since summer is here. Basically it is the "honey do list" as most of you know if the wife is :) everyone is happy.:D

Here are the latest updated pics. I finished the steering column mount along with the custom built brake pedal assembly, Offy gas pedal, B&M shifter, mustang seats, stewart warner tach & gauge panel and the roll bar. It is all ready to be removed and will start to get ready to paint the inside of the car.

    Thanks Steve,
I built the brake pedal ass. The gas pedal came from Speedway. A good friend gave me the seats they fit the car perfect, had to build new bases to get the right seat angle, should work out good though. Need to get them recovered. Motor is at the machine shop :D and should be done very soon. I will post an update on that soon.

Well, it has been a very long and busy summer with work. Haven't had much time to work on the J. We have finished the machine work on the motor and i brought it home for a coat of paint and final assembly. Once i finished with that it was back out to the machine shop for break in and a dyno run. Everything went well with the break in, just before shutting down for the day to come back the next to do full dyno runs we lost a head gasket.
Took a couple days to get that all repaired. Fired it back up and was running great, but now we are having problems with the ignition. So working to correct that problem. Will be back on this after the Thanksgiving weekend.

I always loved The "J's" ! I had a good one, but let it go. I'll regret that for as long as my memory works! Hellyeah paint it like your Dad's! That's too cool. Looks pretty tough so far, nice job!

WE had an earth quack here in Oklahoma a while back. It is now thought that Tex Dean rolled over in his grave when you cut the wheel openings. Just kidding Tex was a great guy had a lot of Henry J cars and parts. He had gave me a hard time about cutting the fenders in my J.
You have done a great job with your's. Paint it like dads

Oh man, you are a righteous metal slapper my friend.

I read through all the posts and the pics make my mouth water. Just hope that that NHRA strip here sees your steel on it. Who knows, we just might be able to run against each other.
    Anyway, you are the master.

    Hooley,
Wanted to share this with you. I had the pleasure to do business with Tex before he left us. He was a great help to me in getting this HJ body squared up with the correct parts and back to where it is now. I also wanted to tell you that my dad was born and raised in Okeen Oklahoma.

    Ken,
Tex lived about 20 miles south west of here and we ran it each other quiet a bit. He was fun to be around.
    You have OKIE roots. GREAT

When we get together some place I'll tell you how I met TEX.

    Keep up the great work.
