Technical 51 mec tranny swap

    we i get ready to redo my 51 merc...if i get rid of the 3 speed manual for a auto, what ****** is out there that i wont have to re work the ****** mount, if possible....keeping in mind i have a 322 nailhead for my power plant.. any ideas? thanks guys

    I made a crossmember from 4" channel iron for my 1939 Ford coupe. .weld flanges on each end to bolt it to the frame. That way you can use any trans you want .
     
  3. You might get lucky and find a trans that would mount to the stock crossmember, but it would be a lot more sanitary to fab up one that would be a perfect fit.

    In a 51 Merc the trans cross member is bolted in, so it will make it easier to make your measurements for any new trans and drop the cross member to weld on a new trans mount if needed.
    I'm running a 700R trans behind my 331 Caddy as I wanted the overdrive for freeway driving.

    Correct, I used a Bendtsen adapter for my 700R to early Caddy, it's a nice piece of work.
