we i get ready to redo my 51 merc...if i get rid of the 3 speed manual for a auto, what ****** is out there that i wont have to re work the ****** mount, if possible....keeping in mind i have a 322 nailhead for my power plant.. any ideas? thanks guys
I made a crossmember from 4" channel iron for my 1939 Ford coupe. .weld flanges on each end to bolt it to the frame. That way you can use any trans you want .
You might get lucky and find a trans that would mount to the stock crossmember, but it would be a lot more sanitary to fab up one that would be a perfect fit.
In a 51 Merc the trans cross member is bolted in, so it will make it easier to make your measurements for any new trans and drop the cross member to weld on a new trans mount if needed. I'm running a 700R trans behind my 331 Caddy as I wanted the overdrive for freeway driving.
No automatic trans that you would want in the car bolts directly to the 322. That said, several outfits sell adapters. http://transmissionadapters.com/Nailhead_install.htm http://nailheadbuick.com/transadaptors See what bolts up to those and go from there.
