Hi, Anyone recognize this Merc? Could you give me some info on it before I start bidding? https://www.iaai.com/VehicleDetail/38240076~US Thanks!!
I question the salvage ***le. Indicates left side damage but I only noticed a minor area where the left fender meets the door. I’d suggest you put Cleveland Ohio in the subject ***le. A lot of hambers around these parts.
Same thoughts here. Minor scratch on left fender - but salvage ***le. That gives me worries, as last time i bought a car, it indicated only front damage (also it was shown in pics) but actually the car run over some animal, and all suspension was broken (no undercariage damage stated in description) only when i got the car shipped to Lithuania and saw it in person i noticed that. Of course i did understood risks buying car site unseen - i've learned my mistake the hard way
Hopefully someone in Ohio will know the car or could help you out and go see it in person. I may be up in that are in the next month or so, but surely someone near there could be of help before then.
I do not recognize this one Gary, Unfortunately I am in no position to inspect it this week at all. Having just come off the road from transporting for the winter this past week, I have commitments to Parents, Mother in Law, etc It appears this auction house is located in Lorain, Ohio even though it is listed as Cleveland. 7437 Deer Trail Ln. Avoid vehicles that have salvage ***les. Have you checked motor vehicle laws in your country to see if you can put an imported vehicle with a salvage ***le on the road ? Jim
Local laws are checked - everything is fine, especially for the cars made before 1960. All you need is visual inspection (not to have obvious damage, which is unsafe), car needs to steer, drive and stop. No one cares about emmisions, ***les, seatbelts/airbags, etc. Salvage and rebuildable ones are even better for me, because i can save on import tax. But thanks for good intentions Jim!
Good to know. So - you can get full coverage on damage on a salvage ***le vehicle in your country ? My commercial auto coverage on my tow vehicle and trailer will not include comprehensive coverage ( damage or loss ) if the vehicle or trailer has/had a salvage or rebuilt ***le/registration on it. Jim
odd that a vehicle that old has a "salvage" ***le. I wonder if it is branded as a rebuilt, or ***embled ***le, not actually salvage. In Michigan it would not get a salvage ***le for a vehicle that old
look at the photos, it is damaged on the left front, the grille is bent, and is away from the fender. the fender is damaged down to the bumper, and pushed back into the door. Still not enough to make it "salvage"
Might have had the salvage ***le previously. Maybe that's why it was made into a mild custom, needed work before because of salvage damage and someone picked it up cheap and figured either 1- I've already got to do a bunch of work, might as well mod it while I'm at it! Or 2- wanna build a custom so this one is cheap and I'm going to do a bunch of modding anyway.... No way to tell why it has a salvage ***le or when it got it.... ..
We dont have many different ***le options, either car is good for the road or not. Thats it. No one cares what was before, authorities are looking at the current state of the car. Even if its badly damaged, you still can rebuild it and get back on the road. All you need to do is (for the cars from 1960), get wheel alignment certificate at authorised shop (which shows that ch***is geometry is fine), go full MOT procedure (lights, brakes, steering, safety, emmisions, etc) and you get get a clear ***le. For older than 1960 cars, just visual inspection as i mentioned before. Thats why many of us are buying cheap cars in US with salvage ***le, bringing them to Lithuania/Latvia fix them and sell them in Europe like nothing happened. For eg. Germany has very strict laws in terms of vehicle damage/repair, but all they see is Lithuanian clear ***le and that is OK for them as we all are in European Union.

No telling what the salvage ***le is for. I looked at a Merc at an auction several years ago that had a salvage ***le, but the car overall looked good. Turned out it was a hurricane car and had been underwater....mud and salt water. They had it cleaned up good, but that meant there was salt water in the wiring, mud in the seat cushions, salt water soaked up inside all the sheetmetal....you get the idea. I p***ed.
No flood damage stated in description? Lucky you noticed that before bidding crazy money on it. On the other hand, this era cars are pretty straight forward, no ECUs, no other electrical nonsence - quite easy to redo wiring. And if you willing to go kustom, it might be a good starting point. Of course you got to get the car dirt cheap to be worth the hussle.
There has to be more damage than what they are showing to be a salvage vehicle, an insurance company isn't to take a loss on that amount of damage.
salvage ***le means nothing on a vintage car. it is an insurance term and is not an indicator of the extent of previous damage. 20 years ago I had a Mustang that was "totalled" 15 years before I bought it and the guy bought it back from the insurance company but never fixed it. it needed a door, front and rear bumpers, tail light panel and front panel under the bumper. it was probably a $1200.00 car when it was totaled. today it would be worth $12,000.00 and the same damage would not total the car.
A bean counter in the office can give a car a salvage ***le and never look at it. Oh, it’s old so I guess it’s a salvage.
