Hi. How much of the 6 volt overdrive system do I have to replace now that my car is 12 volt? One guy said the solenoid only but I'd like to make sure before I hook it up and fry of the the 6 volt parts.
You're gonna get different opinions. My friends 51 Ford is running 12V with all the original 6 volt OD components for years with no problems.
just run it, go to studebaker drivers club website for circuit upgrades but the parts on the tranny will last forever.
We've always figured on the solenoid and the relay being the voltage sensitive components. Both are different for 6 or 12 V systems. I'll have to find out why on the relay. The governor and the kickdown switch don't care which voltage. Wiring of proper gauge and GOOD grounds are imperative.
The relay can be rewired to use a "Hella" style headlight relay in the stock firewall mounted box or you can use a toggle switch for manual override.
