I need some help. Recently acquired a 51 merc frame that still had the ****** attached. I'm wondering what it is and if it's worth anything? It's the original ****** I'm sure.

either a three speed manual, most likely with overdrive, or a Merc-o-Matic

'49/'50 and early '51 have the large round bell housing pattern......mid '51 and later are the same as '49 / '64 Ford rectangular pattern. The earlier pattern is great to use behind an earlier flathead for open driveline. However, they are not particularly strong ******s but the lighter the car the stronger they are.

Either a three speed or three speed with overdrive with a big bell lke the earlier Ford and Mercury transmissions or the later 51 Mercs had the trans that was like the later Ford style with four bolts on the front if it.

What it would be worth would depend entirely upon the condition it is in and how bad someone wanted it.

And as Ray said they aren't particularly strong and from my experiences with them may that trans may already have a damaged cluster gear. Guys used them up pretty quick back in the day. I killed a couple myself in my 51.
