I am having issues keeping my 51 Mercury running. It is an original 255 flathead with the side draft Holley carb. I recently rebuilt the carb, new fuel pump, new plug wires, points condenser and coil. I got it running (idling) and in time. Did not start the car for several weeks while I replaced the brake system. Started the car today and moved it out of the barn. It ran rough and I had to baby it to keep it running. Went to put it back in the barn and I cannot keep it running for more that a couple of seconds. Starts up quickly and will idle for about ten seconds then it dies. I am using a temporary fuel tank currently. Any suggestions on where to look first?

Thank you for the replies. I started by pulling the fuel line from carb to make sure I was getting fuel. Got a lot (all over me). Pulled the Air horn and discovered an empty fuel bowl. Pulled out needle and cleaned out needle seat. Bowl filled immediately. This is second time this has happened. Im thinking needle is gettin hung up in needle seat. Car started first try. Thanks for the help.

Dirty / rusty fuel tank and lines. Pull the tank and have it cleaned, and clean the lines.

Add a fuel filter at the firewall. That's what I did after I had my Holley 885 rebuilt.
You can hide it in the fender well by the vent duct if you want. Just use an extra bit of hose.
