I have a 235 in my car with a three speed on the tree. Almost done with putting air ride on it and just wrapping up a few loose ends. Went with a 4x4 s10 rear end with 3:41 gears and where the u joint bolts to my trans there's two holes that I****ume fluid runs into the original in closed drive line. Was wondering if there is any way around putting a trans in it from an open drive line car. If not then I need info on the crank so I can buy a 4 or 5 speed in it to make it more highway friendly. But I would like to keep the original 3 speed... Thanks!!!
You could use an S-10 T-5******* with an adapter to bolt to your 235. I and many others here, have done this swap and it is fine for your car. My 52 has a T-5 to a 10 bolt Nova rear. My adapter came from Buffalo but there are others also making them.
If you use the late model rear end, you will need a late model*******, cannot keep the torque tube and original*******. What info do you need on the crank ?
There's a thread in the 49-54 forum over on ChevyTalk.Org about an Australian company making an extension housing that converts the stock enclosed driveline transmission to an open driveline. It is spendy however (750.00 US!!!). With a bellhousing change, you can run the larger pattern GM transmissions, or an adapter can be used with the stock bellhousing. Just have to decide which way works best for you since you've already converted to an open driveline. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
keep theInQUOTE="Curtis sanlo, post: 11446979, member: 275392"]Bobg1951chevy I just need to know how many splines it has[/QUOTE] Guess I'm missing what you're asking. Splines on end of crank ? No. If you are asking about splines on the******* input shaft, that should not be a concern, as long as the splines are matched between the input shaft and the clutch disc. Below is the thread spoken about, regarding the STOCK******* ADAPTER to a late model driveshaft and rear end. Instead of using the S10 4 x 4 rear, if your motive was to keep the stock******* and still have a friendly highway ratio, you could have bought a used 3:55 ratio, from a powerglide rear end, about $100. Same original rear end housing was used, only the internal gearing needed to be changed. Unless you have a burning desire to keep the stock transmission now, I cannot see a reason to spend $750. for the adapter. Some folks must want the adapter though, otherwise the guys under would not have manufactured it. http://www.chevytalk.org/fusionbb/showtopic.php?tid/333745
The splines you must be referring to are on the clutch disc? If your going to do the T-5 swap you will most likely have an S-10*******. So use an S-10 clutch. The input shaft of the T-5 will fit the S-10 clutch. My 235 had a 10 inch clutch surface on the flywheel, so the S-10 clutch went in and worked. The crank has no splines. It does have the hole for the input shaft bearing.
Lol thank you. I'm new to the custom scene. So I shouldn't have to change the bell housing and if so what one will work?
As far as the bellhousings, most guys will want to keep the bellhousing mounts, so a truck or Tri-Five bellhousing is usually what gets used. Some adaptation will be required. Those also have the larger transmission pattern. I am Butch/56sedandelivery.
