I just pulled an oroginal flathead inline 8 out of my 51' pontiac....other than the obvious anybody got any helpfull info on swappin a 350 sm chevy
You could try the Ch***is Engineering site for their mounts which would require minimal fabbing to use. They have both engine and ****** mounts. Try here: http://www.ch***isengineeringinc.com/ For a rear axle measurewhat you currently have and then ry this site for stronger axles that can handle the new V-8: http://carnut.com/specs/rear.html Personally, I would try to hunt a Pontiac V-8 for it, be much cooler than a SBC (just my 2 cents).
I put a 350 Olds into a 1954 Pontiac in 1983 (same straight 8 as your '51). All we had to do was weld a tab of steel onto the frame on each side in order to just bolt the 1972 Olds motor mounts to, and everything went right in. The Olds engine had 3 holes in the block, which allowed us to move the motor mount forward or backward a couple inches to clear...something that was in the way. I don't remember if it was the crossmember or the steering box or what, but once that issue was solved the motor practically fell in. I used the original Pontiac radiator, exhaust, speedometer cable, etc, etc. We did have to have the the driveshaft cut. And the guy doing the heavy work just cut the Olds trans crossmember center out and welded it into the Pontiac trans crossmember (I think he did this without even unbolting it from the transmission) and that was it. Chevy or Pontiac V-8 should go in just as easy. (And by the way I was a teenager and beat on that car pretty hard for 18 months and the rear end held up just fine.)
