I'm looking for details on the bellhousing compatibility for my '52 Coronet 230ci f/h six three on the the tree. I would like to retain the tranny. I was looking into purchase a '54 331ci f/h V8 to swap into the car. I wanted to ask around and see if all mopar engines of this era had the same transmission bellhousing patterns. Any suggestions on adaptable motors for swap, and/ or info on the popular motors from 50's era that are god swaps. I'm only looking to swap a early mopar/chrysler engine into the car, no crossbread sbc to par, etc. Any Help on this would be greatly appericated. I'm very new into the rodder scene and the mopar scene. I do not want to mess anything up so I'll ask you guys that have experience 1st. :)

There is no such thing as a Mopar Flathead V8. The '54 331 would be a poly head or a Hemi. If you insist on keeping the transmission and bellhousing in your car, you're pretty much limited to flathead 6's.

Polys didn't come out till '55, so it must have been a hemi, unless it wasn't a '54. There's plenty of threads for dropping a Hemi or SB or BB engine into a Mopar. They're all simular in the engine bay (more or less).

Ok wasn't really sure what they called them i knew hemi of course.I would like to keep my tranny, would a 49 desoto 236 bolt up with no mods i haven't been able to find much on 230ci f/h. If i was goin to stay with 6 really was lookin for a desoto 250ci 6. 108hp & 208 tq...I heard that desoto engines are limited to aftermarket supplies w/p etc...is this true?

Chr/DeSoto shared 6s & Dodge/Plym shared a different 6. I'd guess all of the 6s have the same bell pattern.

    George,
Thats funny how the companies worked then...I'm doing some research on the f/6 bellhousing over on www.p15-d24.com, i saw a posting on there said someone had swapped a 250ci desoto f/6 into a 53 coronet...so i'm looking through thier forum 4 that info. Do you know of any companies that rebuild engines/ have engines?

  7. I would try to locate a 70's Dart,Valiant or Duster with a 318 and snatch the engine and tranny, even the rear end...They are all over the place for less than $1000.

Does anyone know for sure [or not] if the bell housing for the Dodge 230 six cylinder would bolt up to a 241 Dodge Hemi???

I would assume that they would be the same but I know what happens when I assume anything...

    I make an a** out of me...again...

The sixes and v8s had different bellhousing bolt patterns. BUT, in the late 50s and early 60s some Dodge trucks used bellhousing that had both bolt patterns. I have one for my 56 pickup. Not sure about all of them, but this one is a hydraulic clutch setup on the passenger side of the housing. I specifically wanted that as I want to move my pedals to the firewall and get rid of some badly worn/patched/mangled floor clutch linkage.

The 241 and 270 Dodge Hemi would use the same front motor mount arrangement off the water pump housing...

I think any other early Dodge v8 would require some fab work for the motor mounts off the side of the block...

And a different bell housing would be required...

Would the transmission off the flathead 6 be the same as...or should I ask if the transmission would work off a v8 bell housing???

I've been lookin into all that most the night...too me not even goin to bother...I'm going to tear down my oem locked up motor check for cracks in the block and see how much i'll have to bore her out...if the blocks junk gentleman here locally has same motor in running condition for 600 rebuilt 3 years ago said he put alot of miles on it, but still standard bore motor. He pulled to swap hemi into his '52....this guy was the 2nd of 4 owners I'm the 4th. He had the one i have now and another....so i'm goin to just put lil more punch into the flatty.
