I have looked a number of other diagrams and it is all a bit confusing; I am beginning to develop a sense of the concept of what has to happen but feel like I am missing something (obviously since it doesn't work). I did try and rewire the system to the below schematic but with the existing (above) still in place I believe I had doubled the wiring (2 feeds to the fields).

somewhere I am missing something as no matter what changes I make it still isn't charging, factor in burning out a regulator and/or alternator and I am chasing my tail here.

That's right. If everything is connected well it should work. That's the same way my dodge is wired. Its worked great for two years now

The first diagram. I used a speedway wiring harness. That's how they had it wired.

I am using the same harness. Ok well then I have something wired wrong. I need to figure out what is supposed to be doing what and trace it all back.

no joy thus far, I had the alternator check, it is fine, bought a new VR (no way to check it), ensured all of the wires were tight, check continuity of the field wires, traced the "alternator exciter wire" back to the fuse block and check its continuity (which seems to be grounded).

I am out of options/ideas. it has to be something fairly simple but I cannot figure it out.

So I am looking at a diagram, it is showing one of the field wires going to/from the ignition. I suspect this is my mystery exciter wire which when I just checked it (with the negative cable off and for continuity) appears to be grounded. I will connect the negative cable and turn on the ignition tomorrow to see if it has power as I believe it should have.

another issue is that I have always been told that the fld wires can be either side, however an article I am reading says there is a difference between the - and + sides, so I will switch them around as well and see if that matters.

OK I had a chance to look at my car this morning. The red wire runs to the bolt of course. Then the white wire goes to the nearest terminal. Then the one you ad, in my case green wire, goes to the farest terminal. 1403455375840.jpg 1403455390010.jpg
Hope these are clear enough. I was trying to take them in the garage.
I'm using standard brand altentor and voltage regulator. With factor Chrysler plug on the vr. Hope this helps.

appreciate the pictures and you taking time to get them. the question is, where do the 2 field wires go relative to the VR. Do you know if the white wire is going to the top post of the VR or the side? What I am seeing on many of the diagrams is that the top/center post of the VR goes to the position where you have the white wire.

I have the white wire going to the top of the regulator. my added wire(green) is going to the side.

This is the picture out of my kits instructions. Very similar to what you had. 1403460197911.jpg

those instructions are exactly the same as what I have, so in theory it should work. Before I put the hemi in the truck (when it had the 6 cyl) it had a GM alternator which worked/charged after I installed the speedway harness. Therefore it has to be something with the Mopar system. I am going to do some checking here in a minute and will see if I can get some ideas.

Let us know what happens. Wiring is always my least favorite part of cars.

Thanks Gary. I am about to retest the system after a couple of changes, so we will see.

First, thanks everyone for your help. It was just one of the many "dumb***" moments of this build. Turns out that I had the wires switched on the VR which in turn destroyed the VR. fortunately I had a spare laying around and after wiring it exactly like the diagram (duh), I connected my spare and grounded it and "bam" it worked. Went back and tested the others to include my new Mopar and O'Reillys VR and sure enough, both were shot.

Thanks. Got a couple more small issues but it is coming along. The largest is an noisy lifter on the right side; we adjusted it (one of them) and it will get quieter as it warms up but I think it needs adjustment.

Have to adjust the fenders, they must have started with the cab and adjusted everything from that back in the day.

perhaps someone knows. I tried to cut and paste which didn't work. uploading a file doesn't seem to work and the media ****on would let me browse.
