most of the time my truck will spin over fast and fire right up but occasionally it will turn very slowly and may not start. Im just an amateur mech. and havent a clue. the truck has: been converted to 12v neg grnd been air cond turn signals/hazard lights 65 amp delco one wire alt (amps and volts OK) one month old 750 CA everstart battery (load tested OK) six volt starter (not checked yet, works good when jumped off) points dist. plenty of good grnds me checking to be sure everything is off it only happens when running everything all at once (lights, CB, fuel pump, A/C) and going for a drive and cutting it off. When I return it may or may not start up. Have been jumping it off with battery on Miller Bobcat in truck bed and have to drive down night roads with everything off to charge it back up. I have to drive this to work! Please help
First thing I'd do is a voltage test at the battery when running, with nothing turned on. Should be 14.2v at a normal idle speed. If it's lower, take it for a 10 minute drive with nothing on, then test again. If it's still low, I'd suspect the alternator, as you say the battery is new. Also, 65-and higher amp alts in some rare occasions, can have a slipping belt if the pulleys are worn. Hard to spot and most won't squeal when slipping.
Is this something that has just started happening recently, or has it been an issue from the beginning? If its a recent happening, I'd suspect the belt is slipping, or that alt is not functioning to full capacity. You could also have crowded battery cables or wire connections. If it has always been an issue, I have to wonder if the 65 amp alt is big enough. With everything turned on, your alt may not be putting enough out current to over come the amount of current your accessories are drawing. Gene
I thank yall. the alt puts out about 12.5-13v idling and 14-15v at any more than 1200rpm. me and granddad tested it the other day. also hooked an ammeter to it and everything off it put out 40-50A. I know its not the belts becuase they've been slippin ever since I got the truck (u can hear it turning 2500-3000rpm,it has has to wide a pulley on the water pump) Its just started recently and doesn't happen all the time. And granddad doesn't feel good enough to get out into the shop often. once again I thank yall very much
That tells the tale right there. You need a higher amp alternator in order to run all of that stuff and keep the battery charged. Get yourself a 100amp Alt and make sure the wiring is heavy enough to handle it.
I would look at the starter. We see that a lot after a drive and then heat soaks for ten minutes. Also test the battery after it is hot,I change a lot of those neverstart batterys for that same reason.
I had the same problem. It was a bad connection on the starter, worked ok when cold but when it got hot it would not. Changed out the connector bolt on the starter all is good
Starter works excellent cold or hot. I've thought of a bigger alt. just because I like to play with accessories but can't find a good enough deal (CHEEP but made in USA). I lied when I said the battery is new. It's one month old. I put it on a 2A charge for 4hrs saturday and it hasn't done it since but it comes and goes some nights and I hate the piss out of it. Also seems to do it more whenever there are girls watching. Just my luck.
