I have read that you can use the front suspension****y from a aerostar or astro for a low cost upgrade on a 52 ford f1. Has anybody tried either of these?
    Thanks,

The Aerostar was front wheel drive so I doubt it was that. The Astro is basically the same width as the S-10 and you would be hard pressed to make the Astro steering box work with the F-1 column. You would be better off using the S-10 clip and there are more S-10s than Astros out there anyway...

Thanks court...would using a ididit column be an alternative. The thing is I can pick up a rebuilt astro clip for next to nothing...

Check fordtrucks.com, There's plenty of info there on front-end swaps for the F-1. Aerostar will work, but the jag frontend is probably the easiest.

The tech article at Fordtrucks.com is full of great info on these trucks. I think it was called suspension alternatives for ford trucks, or something similar. Also, search in the 48-60 forum for jag front ends. Lots of info. Based on what I read there, and some phone calls to members of that forum, I went with a jag xj6 front end. Easy bolt in, cheap to buy and rebuild, big brakes, A arms w coil springs etc.

Aerostar is a rear wheel drive. I know because I had one. Underpowered and overweight.

The tech article at the Ford trucks website is excellent. Myself, I'm using the Dodge Dakota front crossmember built by the HAMB's El Polacko who owns Industrial Chassis. A truck front suspension for a truck.

Here's the link to index of suspension articles on Ford-Trucks.com, start with "Part One" and work your way through them all:

    http://www.ford-trucks.com/article/idx/10/0/

Read them all, super informative and helpful no matter what kind of truck you're building.

I have a '52 F1 that has a front clip from a '78 Monte Carlo (Cutlass, Regal). I didn't do the conversion; it had already been done when I bought the truck. The truck drives pretty good however.

My only complaint is that it lowered the truck about 3 inches (I prefer stock ride height). I am currently researching ways to raise it back to closer to the stock ride height.

    Peace,
    -DV
