Hey I have a 52 f1 pickup I am about to swap the motor (239) for a super low mileage 239 now I know this truck can come with a 3speed trans or an optional 4 speed my question is the clutch any different in the 4 speed than the 3 is it heavier or the same for both?
From what I have learned the 4 speed came with an 11" clutch. I know the light duty 3 speed (side shift in your case) would have had a smaller factory clutch. I am not Sure if it would have been a 9" or 10". You can use the 11" clutch setup with the 3 speed.
The standard trans was a toploader 3 speed (aka the "light duty " trans with 2nd/high synchros) with a 10" clutch. The optional 4 speed trans (aka the "heavy duty" spur gear NON synchronized trans) came with the 11" clutch. You can run either trans on either clutch in your F1 pickup. I wouldn't recommend using a 10" clutch in a one ton or bigger truck though. The 4 speed truck trans wasn't much fun driving around town unless you were very good at double clutching. Plus you generally only use 2nd gear to start out in because 1st gear is a low-low granny gear ratio. Normally you can't kill this trans because it's so beefy.....unless of course you don't get your double clutching skills down pat real quick.
