Hey guys & gals hope this question doesn't get everyone's panties in a knot but here goes I have a 52 Ford F-1 pickup which has a 350 chevy in it (bought it this way...don't trash me ) and it has the original Ford rad (which was recored) in it but I was wondering what is the proper rad cap, it has a 4lb lever type on it but is that sufficient for the 350? Any help is appreciated.
I don't know what it's supposed to be, but I'm running a 7lb cap in my '56 F100 with a stock radiator and SBC, works fine down here in Texas.
The motor doesn't care what kind of pressure you run in the system. The higher the pressure, the higher the boiling point of the fluid, although it only changes by about 3 degrees per psi. In other words, if you got cooling issues at 4 psi (about 224 deg. F), going to a 7 psi cap (about 233 deg. F) probably isn't going to help. For the record. I run a 14 psi cap in my '51 with a 351W. Good Luck.
The upper radiator tank is rather large on the f1 and if it is not overheating with an original 4lb I'd stick with that. With a higher pound cap the upper tank may end up cracking or leaking on you.
clarence has the original (and i mean probably original 1948) ford cap on the original radiator (with the original core). it has a 283 that i put in there in '92. this radiator and cap cools the 283 just fine. i have issues at idle because of lack of air flow, but that's not the rad or cap's fault. for years i've been telling myself to build a good shroud, but the only time i get stuck at idle seems to be cruising the nsra shows. since i haven't been to one of them for the last 2 years and probably won't ever go again it's ceased to be a problem.
