What flathead would have been in a 52 f-5? I found a truck and was going to try and get the motor out.

Probably a 337 Lincoln. If so, the distributor would be in the rear.

I would say 239. I think the 337" 'Lincoln' engine was in the F7 and F8.

Definitely the 239. The 337 was used only in F-7,8. And in spite of all the anecdotal information floating around, there is no evidence in Ford's literature (Parts catalogs, shop manuals) that the 255 Merc was ever installed (at the factory) in any trucks.

The '52 F-1 through F-6 trucks used the standard 239" flathead, while the F-7/F-8s used the new ohv Lincoln-based 279" or 317" V8s.

I was thinking it was a 239. But did not want to make the guy an offer and it be the 337. He said it turns over when you hook a battery to it. And hauled hay with the truck in the eighties.

Canadian Merc trucks had 255's. I have a shed full of 'em!
Plus, in the '50's and '60's, when you bought a rebuilt flattie from Ford, here in Sask. at least, for a truck, they gave you a 255 engine.
