I'm flirting with this idea. Making a Factory Sleeper Cab out of my '52 GMC COE Wrecker project.

I know where there is a sleeper off a 1950's mack conventional, its about 36 inches in length. The owner wants me to make an offer. I'm thinking 250bucks. what do you guys think or have paid?

Shopdawg - If that sleeper in in decent shape and you can get it for $250, that would be a steal. The less-than-pretty newer boxy style sleepers go for a way more than $250. Good luck!

  8. Most all 50s macks w/sleepers were the integral type. If it is a separate unit it is probably aftermarket. 60s Mack sleepers were all aftermarket. IIRC Able Body was the most common brand. If you are looking at a Mercury, (polished or painted with fancy fluting in the skin) they are getting real rare and are valued accordingly.

That's funny. A local business has one of those fluted sleepers on an old truck that they use for daily around town use. I don't know if anyone has EVER slept in it. I always thought it was ugly as hell but I'll look at in another light now!

  10. I have heard that they weren't very good quality, (lot of leaks, etc) but were a status symbol back in the day. If I could have found one in good shape, (they show every scratch, ding and dent) I would have used one in my build. I even thought about scratch building one instead of going the way I did.

I'll see if I can get a picture of it in the next few days. They're a little... err... flamboyant, aren't they?

It can be separated where it's put together, & grafted to any '47-53 cab, if the whole cab is not needed.

  20. That would be a real nice addition to any Chevy/GMC (COE or Conventional) and in my opinion, the price isn't bad

I've decided not to tackle this. Going to extend my wrecker body instead. So the Sleeper Cab is available.
