I've been working on my '53 Desoto alot lately, while underneath it yesterday I noticed the sway bar had been poorly repaired at some point. Looks like somehow it snapped in two pieces, then some one booger/stick welded it back on. Now from day one i have noticed the car not sitting level in the front, this is most likely the reason why. I'm sure when they "fixed" it they just held the two pieces together and welded it up. Luckily, there is a '53-'54 Chrysler in a local junkyard. I went and pulled the sway bar assembly from that and it is a perfect match to my Desoto. The problem is that I had to cut one of the mounting brackets to get it off the Chrysler.(typical junkyard thrashing) The bracket i cut is the one that holds the bushing to the frame, right at the curve in the sway bar. The one i took off my Desoto is good, but i am not sure how to get it off aside from cutting it, slipping it on, and welding it back together on the new sway bar. I can't simply slide the bushing off and slide a new one on, it won't go around the bend. Any tips would be greatly appreciated.
my 53 dodge sway bar is off right now due to front end rebuild taking place. I'll look at it tonight in the garage and see if i can figure anything out. If the bushings are as worn out as mine are it would probably rattle as it rounded the curve in the bar.
