I can get 500 series kits that fit from 47-59, and CPP has a 400 series kit that is listed as fitting 55-59. I think I like the 400 series kit better. Hot Rod did a story on installing the 55-59 kit and from the pictures I cant see why it wouldn't fit a 53 truck. Does anyone know if/why this kit will or wont fit a 53?
Frames are a lot narrower on the 47-55 first series, not a lot of room under the fenders near the radiators for a larger steering box. If you are willing to notch inner fender it might work.
Looked a little closer, the early truck steering box sits on top of the frame where the older one is inside it. I think I could still use it, would have to make my own mounting bracket. This is the kit with the 400 box for the 59-9 trucks. http://www.classicperform.com/Store/1960_1972_Chevy_Truck/CPP5559PSK-OC.htm This is the Hot Rod article on installing the kit. Other than having to fab my own bracket I don't see why I couldn't do what they did. http://www.hotrod.com/how-to/transmission-drivetrain/1505-power-steering-for-straight-axles/
I made my own bracket cause I also put a dropped axle with mono springs. Had to move box up about 3 inches from. Where directions said. I think k my steering box is from a 1/2 ton Chevy truck about a 78 maybe? Sent from my XT1080 using H.A.M.B. mobile app
Done. I ordered the 55-59 kit and it worked fine. Actually I think it makes for a much cleaner installation than the kit they sell for the 53 trucks that moves the steering box forward of the axle and outside of the frame. I cut a hole through the frame so the 400 series box mounts the same way it would on the newer trucks. Other than having to put a couple u-joints on the shaft because of the lower mounting position of the new box, no modifications were needed anywhere.
