Here is the story I have decided to sell my drag car to build my 53 chevy 210 I wanted to do a chop top custom but I love drag racing so now I am thinking G***ER. The car is very clean and am a little nervous about chopping the top I have done a few trucks but never a car. I figures if I made a g***er I could have the best of both worlds a cool car and I will not have to cut up a solid old ride. I am looking for some pics of 49-54 chevy g***ers. I am not worried about cutting the rear wheel openings because this is the only spot that has rust. I hope someone can help me out.
just fixed a broken door gl*** in this last friday, it's just a 502/502 crate motor that's been stepped on. car has run 11.62 best but he drives it everywhere
I think NONAME has a kick *** ride there! I don't think something like that would look right being chopped.
WOW...Noname i have the same color combo 54 but mine is lower, stock rims and is more traditional but i always wonder what it would look like if i went g***er with it. Now i'm second guessing myself hehehe
it's not mine, people pay me to work on this stuff. I never opened the hood/ tilt front end. but it's just as clean. the owner said the front axle and 9" both came out of the same 66 econoline. he said that was one year ford put both together.
I didn't mean to dog g***ers. I drove a REAL 40 Ford g***er to high school for a few months back in 91? or so. NOBODY liked that car. Not even the old guys that used to run g***ers. It was pretty spartan interior wise. Not real popular with the ladies (girls don't like climbing over a roll cage). It was geared such that I could really only do about 80 for any period of time without it getting hot. It was pretty much an old drag car with lights and windshield wipers. I've also had 14 Henry J's. So I like the whole g***er thing but I think guys are getting a little stupid with it. If you've got some smooth riding comfortable mid 50's cruiser and you want to tear out the interior and make it ride like **** at least make it really fast. In short, don't be a g***er poser. If you're gonna do it, do it all.
I think kustoms are dieing atleast you dont see nearly as much good ones as there should be, I still had fun at Road Agents but def a majority was hot rods. Gettysburg is almost dead, Its prolly not gonna be around too much longer
I didn't mean to dog customs either. Fact is, I like them BOTH ways. A friend here in Roch. NY (do a search on here for Tony) has a great custom. I'm not positive, but I think it's a '54. Anyways, I have loved g***ers since the 60's, and by nature, I like to be a little different. So, I opted for the g***er style, since you don't see too many of those (53-54) done that way. Customs do seem to be dwindling a bit, at least here in the Northeast area. I had heard they were noticably down at the Road Agents show, and its a shame whats happened to Gettysburg. Perhaps the owners are just taking a little rest? I hope thats all it is , because they , like g***ers, hot rods, FX, street freaks, etc., are a vital part of traditional hot rodding, and we need them around. Variety, and creativity, are what makes this hobby(or is it obssesion?) so much fun and interesting to me.
i don,t know if if custom are disappearing fads come and go in this hobby interesting g***er style cars were gone for a long time but now are back in full force my frist love is customs but i love all types and great to see people building old styles as frodfreak said thats what makes it interesting
I am building a custom out of my 53 Louver_dude's is a custom Bill's is going to be a g***er Those are the 3 we have been working on for a while. It all depends on what kind of a ride you want. If you are into drag racing or cruising.
Build it G***er .Just dont go crazy with the bling, bling. I dont know why some people seem to thing a straight axled car that was originally independent will ride and handle like ****.I here this alot from people at shows ,mostly spectaters that drove up in a new Mazda ,with one of those little phones sticking out of their ear.My Falcon is drivin daily all over and it rides and steers real well with almost no bump steer.As long as you take your time and measure it right you shouldnt have a problem .A lot of cars that i have seen that where G***ered that supposedly ride and steer like **** were using junk old truck axles that were probably bent and still had the factory wore out king pins and spring bushings.
Ditto. I, too, drive my straight axle Falcon everywhere. Yes, the ride is firm, but nowhere near that of my 93 F-250! There is no bumpsteer, and it actually handles better than stock . It's all in how you set it up. Two guys on here who helped me were Dragracr 50, and Tingler. I also called Rich at Radir Wheels with some questions. All gave me valuble info. Back in the 60's-70's, a lot of these cars were put together with old components, and no thought about caster, camber, bumpsteer,etc. Naturally, they did handle terrible. Many also used the truck springs the axle came from. Hence, a very harsh ride! Like Satan said , take your time, and if you are not sure about something, ask someone who's been there. I like to measure 4 times, weld once!!
Thanks guys I like the customs and also the g***er look but I love drag racing I have come to the conclusion that I cannot afford a drag car and a custom. So I will build a drag car with some style ,G***er style. So off to the chopping block goes the mustang. I have done some ch***is work but any pics would be great. I have been looking thru speedway and I see what looks like a pretty good deal on their axle kits with leaf springs any insight on these "kits"
Look at the picture i posted of mine. No straight axle in it. Lift blocks 4" between the frame and crossmember put in back in the late 60's. I could pull them out in a day and change wheels and have a mild custom. Dont totally ruin it for the next generation car guy.
do like kurt says. Use the blocks between the frame and cross member. If it was good enough for Mazmanian's(spelling) corvette, it should be good anywhere.
